UK Golden Demon 2011 - Handgunner vs Skeleton - Silver

Silver in the Duel category at the UK Golden Demon 2011. I was very surprised to be awarded a trophy, as many of the other entries were so good. I am in disbelief but very pleased nonetheless! I received several questions about the gunshot on the day, so here is a quick guide: I first drilled out the end of the musket barrel, and inserted a length of brass rod of a thickness roughly matching the imaginary diameter of the chamber. The explosion was built up using little balls of greenstuff - it took a few attempts to get it looking random but tidy. I then blended them together before it dried. The skeleton's head was drilled through, and I cut around the entry and exit hole to create damage - this was done far more extensively on the back to represent the big exit hole. Once I had slid the head down the rod to the right point I simply dabbed a bit of superglue around the end of the rod and dipped it in GW small slate bits, which I shuffled about a bit before it dried, to represent the little bits of skull. A small greenstuff ball was then placed on the end for the bullet. Looking around on the day at all the Golden Demon entries and the Eavy Metal cabinets reminded me that I still have a lot to learn in terms of painting - I definitely think I was awarded based on concept as much as painting quality. I look forward to coming up with something new for next year! Any comments and criticisms are welcome, Thanks, James

brilliant concept and very nice paint job too. i really like the blood stained bandage on the gunner, and the expression you have got into the chaps face. shows that there is more to painting than just pure technical skills. it s an art form. nice job!
