Fantasy Easter Island Heads
I've had in my head this picture of a travelling band of characters come across the old ruins of an ancient civilization. The border of the country was dominated by tall statues similar to the easter island statues, except that many of the fantasy races were represented. What we have here are ten statues that represent Dwarves, Elves, Orcs and Humans. These were sculpted out of sculpty and casts were made in resin. These were finished in September 2003. They're all around 5 inches tall. I glued them on sanded basswood pieces and I built up the surrounding ground with a small amount of spackle/filler, which stops it from having the flat look that my Crystal terrain ended up having. The dwarf had some problems and after I baked the sculpty, I finished up the beard with a small amount of cheap plumbers epoxy. (It's not worth wasting good greenstuff on these inexact sculptures!) I think they have a lot of character. Unfortunately I hurried up the mold making process and due to some other problems the Orc statue came out miscast 2/3rds of the time; that's why I only have 10 statues and not three sets of 4. Live and learn, I guess. I was surprised about how much resin goes into each one -- since I'm used to casting smaller things, the resin amounts are small compared to the rest of the project. In this case, it ended up being fairly significant -- I would use around 1/3 of my bottle of resin for 4 statues, which amounts to about $3 a figure for cost. Painting was fairly simple; I used an old toothbrush for a speckled nature, and it's my typical base treatment. I'm pretty happy with them in the end.
