Derek the Tall
This was my entry for a local painting contest (Pegasus Games in Madison, WI) which happened on 10/5/2003. I was happy to get honorable mention in the "Small" category with this 4-hour paint job I finished in October 2003. It's some of my best metal works to date, being a combination of metal and non-metal paints allowing me to use NMM techniques with slightly metallic paints, which ends up giving a pretty good look. I think this may be the best face that I've ever painted. The final touch was a hair from my head to string the bow. I applied a dot of superglue on one end, wrapped the hair around it and let the glue dry, and then I drew it tight and wrapped it around the other end. It gives a final realistic look to a great simple figure. In the end, it's not the best model to pick for a painting contest because there is no real dynamics to the figure. It's a good figure, but when it goes up against the dynamic nature of the best of Rackham figures, it's going to fall short. Had I had more notice, I might have been able to pick a better model instead of this one which is to be used in a Roleplaying game. I'm happy with how well it did in the contest. (Geek fact; the contest was judged by John Kovalic and the prize I received was an autographed copy of the fifth Dork Tower collection named "Understanding Gamers".) As soon as I have a faster net connection, I'll be posting an article of the 18 entries in the painting contest.
