Vision in Colors #9

Here is my entry for the Vision in Colors #9. This figure was finished in September, 2003. More information on the Visions in Color "contest" can be found at: http://miniature-painting.net/visions_index.html If you're not familiar with VIC, I really encourage you to check it out! -- I started this figure with the knowledge that I wouldn't have a lot of time to do a large diorama, and that I'd want to be able to use the figure in Roleplaying situations. This caused me to try to figure out a good small conversion that would remove the roof motif. I decided that the simplist conversion would be to have him balanced on a brick wall. I sculpted the wall around the timber out of greenstuff. I left the figure in two parts for much of the painting because I knew that the long coat would interfere the painting. I also wanted to experiment with using an airbrush for miniature painting. I have a paintable mask (something I found at Micromark) which I used to cover parts of the figure and then I airbrushed a base coat over parts of the figure. After each coat, I did a clear protective coat to stop the paint from flaking off when I eventually removed the mask. The mask was removed by soaking the miniature in water and then using the airbrush to act as a highpower water spray -- after the mask soaked, it easily flaked off. The airbrush worked quite well for the cloak and the skin -- looking back, I wish I hadn't done anything else to the skin. I have an in progress picture of what it looked like after the airbrushing. I didn't use too many other new tricks to paint the miniature at this point. The airbrush was a learning experience, and I can see how it would help if I needed to paint a large number of similar figures, like Space Marines.

Cool work with the wall idea Peter! The pic seems a little dark on the inside areas. ice colros though I suspect you could do more highlighting maybe. Overall a nice mini though :D - Glyn
