Skink priest

This was my entry for Golden Demon UK 2013. In many ways it's the model I'm most happy with but unfortunately it didn't make the first cut. It was the first model I'd painted in almost two years and more of a painting experiment than a competition entry. For some reason I've wanted to paint an albino creature with spots on it. Though I've always imagined painting a squig that way I thought it'd look good on this skink as well. With Massive Voodoo as a big inspiration lately I wanted to go with a really realistic and desaturated look. One way of doing this was to use a very limited palette. For this reason, and to tie the whole model together, Dheneb Stone and Dryad Bark has been used in almost every paint mix on the model. With this limitation and the decision to paint the skin white I did my best to paint it and the helmet as distinct from each other as I could. Another touch was to paint the golden skull in really glossy and saturated colours to bring contrast to the style of the rest of the model. To still tie it together with the overall look I used blue and red on the gems to match the markings on the skink. The final detail was to add the drop of blood to the javelins to add hint of a narrative that he'd just retrieved (or stolen) the golden skull from an unfortunate foe.
