King Maulg – A Won Game And Reminiscences Of Chevalier Years

The character King Maulg (le Roi Maulg) from Figone is sure one of the most painted and converted miniatures. For my taste though he looks sometimes great but not kingly enough and without his crone he seems just like some ogre or troll. So I thought it would be fun to show him in his throne room with an pretentious painting of him hanging above his throne. The axe doesn't fit in in this concept and so I build him his other two insignias besides the crone: a globus cruciger and sceptre. I wanted the throne room reflect his majestic persona and so I made the floor look like marble with a red carpet before his stool. Although it maybe makes little sense he also got lots of coins and tokens laying around. The figure itself with his knock knees, hanging Marlon-Brando-cheeks and flabby posture always looked to me as he was very old and tired. So I decided to make him look like even more as he was an old man, with long white hair and a wooden hand (which is sure movable). Also for more contrast I made the painting in his back like one done in his younger years, with full grown hair in his time of full strength, maybe painted fresh after the crowning. The chessboard was fun to make and was also important to me (besides the fact that its often called “game of kings”). I am not a regular chess player but the positions on the board make sense and are a little in-joke for gamers. For those of you who have seen my Maulg before: I altered the position of the board for this photo, so that the king now is the black player instead of the white. As he has grown on me I wanted him to look less stupid, but maybe surrounded by idiots, although this makes the scene maybe a little more depressing for him. Comments are always welcome.
