CCIV - Vandorendra, Demon

Wow. I can't believe that I painted this figure -- I'm so happy with it. This was the second entry that I did for the 2003 Chick Challenge IV -- if you're not familiar with it, I really encourage you to check it out at http://thewarp.net/war/believers/index.htm . Again, wow. The first thing that I did was the base, and then I painted the face -- this is one of the first times that I painted the face first and not last, and I think I'm going to paint the face first from now on. A good face really puts inspiration into the rest of your painting. And in this case, I think it's an order of magnitude better than any other figure that I've done. The metals are mixes of metallic and nonmetallic paints, which gives me a little bit of color to try some NMM techniques with metallic paint. I think the technique shows promise -- I need more practice with it to be sure. It gives the metallic luster in person and I think it photographs a little bit better. Anyway, I'd love some comments on what I think is my best figure to this date. I feel I need to thank both Jenova and Menelker for displaying their work here on CMoN; Jenova inspired the face and Menelker inspired the yellow scale work, but it might be a bit fine to show up in the photograph. This was done in November 2003. I retook the picture for this submission because in retrospect the red backdrop I used for the CCIV submission was a bit of a mistake. I did two copies of this figure at the same time; one to keep and one to sell.

If I could give you a 9.5 I would. I know this model well: a Bob Ridolfi sculpt. Bob is almost too concerned with the business of the moldmaker: he tends to have miniatures that look great from the front and from the back, but the side is pretty flat. You were smart to bend the arms a bit before painting her up. The skin tone is very good, and the mix of metallics and non-metallics is very good. Metallics don't photograph as well as NMM, but when executed properly they look a hell of a lot better in real life. (Here's a clue as to why the "weapons look a little flat": your monitor can display millions of colors but silver isn't one of them.)

AWesome. The face is one fo the best I've ever seen. Dynamic but very natural. The only "flaw" I can see is, as has been mentioned already, the weapons seem a little flat compared to the rest.

I agree with the others. The weapons could use more work to bring them to the level of the rest of the mini. I think its great, but more importantly so do you, so congrats!
