Azarphan, the death knight

Ok here it is, my first mini. I've dithered for a few days over putting this up or not. I've not based it yet becasue I'm really lacking inspiration in what to put under his feet (grassy green stuff just doesn't seem right) and I'm limited to found objects as my budjet won't stretch to fancy flocking and static grass and stuff. Taking photos of these things is alot harder than I ever imagined. The metallics look way shinier than they are in real life, though I think I took this before a coat of matt varnish, would this help with the reflections if I reshoot it? I enjoyed working on the cape but my favourite bit is his axe, I used several layers of washes with salt sprinkled on and left to dry (it sucks up the paint and gives the mottled effect) This was an experiment with painting minis and I decided I do like it so i'll keep on with it. Please comment, I don't mind the low ratings, but remember this is my first one so post constructive feedback. I want to get better at this not have my confidence shattered

This looks very nice. I really like the effect on the axe, and i may have to try the technique of putting salt on the paint. I was trying to do a mottled colour previously, but it never came out right. Thats an incredibly good idea.

The cloack is well done (you can add some more highlight but is already ok) On the other side you need some more highlights on the axe wood and some variation and blacklining on the armor, it seems just too plain. I dont like the axe but this is only my personal taste, I have to admit that is executed really well. For the base you can sculpt some tile to simulate a castle or dungeon floor.

For a first mini, this is fantastic. You obviously have done some kind of painting before (or done a LOT of reading here on the site!), since you understand the basics of highlighting and shading. The cape is nice, but the rest of him looks kinda flat. Metals are hard to get right (whether you're using Non-Metallic Metal or true metallic paints), and one of the things that takes a lot of practice on minis. You might want to try some ink washes to darken the recesses of the armor a bit; see some of the articles here to get some ideas on how to do metals.
