I definately concur about the priming. It significantly increases the change of the paint staying on the mini. Also I suggest avoiding freehand art until you have mastered the basics.
By the looks of it this model wasn't primed/undercoated. Doing this will help keep the paint on the model and hide small areas that can be missed whilst painting. Good try and keep practising.
