No, they're dwarves. They've carefully graded the surface and trimmed the grass in order to keep variation down to facilitate aiming the cannon.
I don't know where people come up with their convoluted fairway ideas.
Honestly though, rip those guys off that base, texture it, make it bumpy, put ruts where the cannon digs in when it recoils and churned up mud where the dwarves are walking between the mouth of the cannon, the end and the ammo stockpile.
It'll add a while new layer of detail that will only improve the piece.
