1) I didn't "make up" the quote. It is quite well known and cited frequently actually.
2) I hardly see how preserving Liberty can make one a slave.
3) I also don't see how preserving the rights of sponsors is a valid reason to vacate privacy and human rights. And if you want to present a pretty picture to the world, don't negate people's right to protest. Just designate areas where it is allowed and areas where it is permitted. Giving the police the right to enter people's homes to confiscate items seems rather excessive.
Sorry if I offended you by offering an alternate opinion. I just find it pretty scary how easily people will give up their freedoms in order to avoid minor annoyances. And I certainly wouldn't single out the British as I can point to my own country's "Patriot Act" as an example of excessiveness.
