This is the sticky thread. There are lots of painting tips and tutorials for every techniques that will help you to improve and to discover new things you didn't know before.
Also, keep posting your minis regularly to get advices and feedbacks.

Just noticed something that someone may or may not have pointed out before: the stickied thread, the first section on what is coolminiornot needs to be updated due to the recent layout changes.

On another note: what the heck happened?!? The forums, the main page everything changed. I take half a year off and everythings all wonky.

To the OP: I don't think I have anything I can add. Practice and patience. Personally I would set a loftier goal then 'Evey Metal painter though, from what I understand the job doesn't pay so well. Say Millionaire Entrepreneur with 50 golden demons. That's a job to aspire too :D

Thanks! I've heard the thing about 'eavy Metal pay, but no ones know the EXACT number (I've heard minimal wage or a little above)? I'm new here so IDK what changed, the top thing (logo) changed from last time I saw it.

That comes with most "Bulk" art jobs. The animators at Disney make about 10 bucks an hour. You just have to do it because you love it. I think if you really want to turn a profit, win a golden daemon or two then whore out your services, or sell the ones that won you those. I've seen Golden Daemon winning models go on Ebay form 300 bucks to 1 grand.

@ Hard Cover, I saw one of Latham's (?) minis go for $500. It was the fantasy chaos Silvald (?) he wore the gold armor, nice model it was.

After 30+ hours of work, the giant is done!
Other random stuff, the two commands squads won local painting comps.

Some advice on the lighting; try to have light sources from the top and both sides of the model, you can also construct a light box out of cardboard. If you need more lamps you can borrow them from around the house. You could also find some fairly priced desk lamps at a local retail store if you would prefer your own. The models are looking good. Are you using a lot of inks? In a few of the pictures some of them look glossy. If you are, try to water down and put fewer coats of ink or spray them with a light coating of matte finish. I would also try to limit the use of inks to make it more challenging. Try to learn where shadows should naturally fall on a model by establishing a light source angle. Good luck!

Mate I would love to see some better pictures of your UM command squad especially apothecary. That's a really cool idea!

Thanks will post them tommarow!

Thanks, I need to buy for daylight lamps, but in US they can be 10 times more expensive. The ink look is from one of the following: Glossy light, lack of matte varnish or in case of the running guy, I actually used inks :)

High quality mini's but unless you're like 16 and haven't peaked your artistic skills I can't see you becoming an eavy metal painter. Sorry :p

Keep posting mini's though really nice!

I would say that art isnt something you can "peak" in, its not like sports where your body cant compete to the same level as younger athletes.

Basically keep practicing and see where it takes you :)

You dont wanna be a em painter anyway, you have to work in Nottingham! :p

I like everything except for the back of the cloak. You can tell that it's just been very heavily washed. I'd say you should add in some darker reds to the shading in there instead of the quick jump to black, it would make it much more realistic. The use of black and white often lead to something looking quite flat, thats why color is important. So yeah, more red.

Word. Art isn't a "Natural" tallent. It's a learned skill. Or so I learned going to Savannah College of Art and Design for 6 years.

I like your chaos guy but I agree with Necroghast that the back of the cloak only looks like ifit had received lots and lots of washes. I think you should highlght your shades (is it very clear?) to soften them. A good solution is, as Necroghast said, to use darker reds instead of black. You also can mix red with dark blue.

Yay, Chaos guy done, grass needs one more highlight.

I really liked it a lot more when it was just highlighted with the blue. When you can back and dry-brushed the white you kind of destroyed that instead of accenting it.

Also don't you think the horns and furs need to be brightened a little? I know you're going for an "In the dark" motif here, but those things are usually pretty light colors in the day, at night they should still be lighter than the rest of the mini.

Or make a warm shade with red and green. (Complimentary colors)
