Wow... Sybelle is some good old-fashioned nightmare fuel. Neat project though. How many different people do you have painting them (didn't you say that different people were helping with the painting)?

There are ten people (counting myself) that are painting pieces for this.

Just about have Beattie (Black King) done. Few areas to touch up and think I'll call him good. If you see anything, though, please point it out (other than my painting and photography are garbage; already know that ;)).

Also started in on the white rooks (Tony):

Everything is looking good!

Quick question, the deadline changed right? cause last time i heard it was feb 14th, but now its 28th of march? that makes everything much easier!

Once again everything is coming along nicely, i can't wait to see the finish product of the chessboard.

Gary.

Classic Project

Glad to see someone doing this, as I'd considered the idea many times before. After all, tabletop miniatures & chess pieces descend from the same stock, yes? You've done an outstanding job on the chessboard! Hope you put plenty of clear-coat on the pieces once they're done.

Thanks for the kind comments, all!

Yes, the deadline for the contest changed, but I'm trying to stick as close as possible to the original deadline; mostly because I really want to get this done and out of the way. However, it does give us some breathing room, just in case.

Out of curiousity, how and why did you choose the figures you did to be the pieces?

After we all chose to do zombies and humans, I started picking what I would like have in a chess set. Some of the pieces were easy to decide on, whereas some were quite difficult. Probably spent a week pouring over several mini company websites trying to find pieces that would fit the feel.

I knew I wanted pieces like the "not-Ash" for the white king and big zombies for the black rooks, but other than that, I was pretty open if others had a different choice. Some of the minis in the set are ones chosen by the people that painted them.

Hope you put plenty of clear-coat on the pieces once they're done.

Absolutely! Even the pieces being donated by others get a coat of Dull Cote after they arrive here, just in case.

Okay, update time!

Meant to get some pictures last night, but got kind of side-tracked.

First, the white rooks (Tony from Hasslefree) are pretty much done. They need some touch-ups and few areas of shading/highlighting before I'll call them done.

Working on one of the white pawns (Katie, also from Hasslefree). And yeah, she needs a lot of work yet:

And I've got the white knights (Ray, again, Hasslfree) prepped and ready to go. No pictures yet.

And finally, the board so far. Those poor, poor people are seriously outnumbered at the moment:

Big projekt. But you tell us, who win the first game? *smile*

As for the minis: In this case I would prefer (much) morhe depth (contrast) on the painting. The single minis would have a great effekt, if the dingle parts are structured more.

Greetings, Taggi

Sorry for taking so long to get new pictures of the chess set up; been kind of busy. Here's where we are right now:

As you can see, four more pieces to go and it's done.

I've talked to one of the photographers at work to get some more professional photos of it once it's all done.

This is almost finished. I remember at first when you only had the project in mind without pictures of painted minis, I was sure that it was going to be something good and you didn't deceive me.

without seeing any closeups, isnt it going to be pretty hard to tell "who-is-who" when playing with this? im thinking especially on the 'good' side (anyone can recognize the zombie pawns right? :) ) still love the idea though, brilliant!

@MK: Thanks!

There will be a sheet that goes along with the chessboard that will have photos of the pieces indicating what they are (pawn, knight, rook, etc). It'll also have information on who painted what.

You have to tell us, which side have won the first fight.. *smile*

If you're asking me which side I think would win the first fight, definitely the living; they have Ash and a female Ash. That's too much awesome for the undead to handle.

Haven't actually played a game with these yet.

A few pics of the (nearly) finished chess set. Although I'm still waiting on a few pieces to arrive in the mail, we're going to put this up for auction very soon.
