GW changes to cheaper materials and puts up prices.

even tekcast, the company that appears to have supplied GW with the technology say it drops production cost by approx. 40% going off a quick skim of their very bad website.

A handful of people have mentioned that they think the Finecast packaging looks good. When I popped in on launch day the bits of paper in the plastic packs looked as though they'd been printed with an inkjet on cheap paper, very shabby looking. I'd assumed that they were glossy trading cards with a pretty picture on the front & some fluff or stats or painting notes on the back. They're not are they? Just a cheap slip of paper.

Just me or does anyone else think the packaging lacks the refinement that should be standard at this pricepoint?

Are these packs easy to pop open or are they completely heat sealed so that they have to be cut open? How easy are they to slice up without damaging the contents (inc. paper if you're the type who likes to scrapbook diary this kind of thing?).

Cheers, B.

Looking at the Tekcast website, are any sculptors on here tempted to use the same stuff for their own miniatures, just as a "taking them on at their own game" thing?

Well I don't know the number of minis you could cast with 2 gallons of the stuff, but at $180 you better be able to make a lot. Then again, you'd only have to make a solid 20, sold at $10 a piece, to recoup the material cost. And unless you're casting monstrous creatures, you could certainly get more than 20 minis out of 2 gallons.

Easiest way to find out, get the volume of a "Finecast" by dropping it in a kitchen measuring jug and fill up to litre measure with water.
Extract "finecast" and see what volume is left, difference is Volume used for model.
It should be a simple A (amount of Resin) divided by B (Volume of model and sprue) to get numbers and cost per unit.

I once paid £6.00 for a litre of resin and catalyst (*), so it's be interesting to see what the volume of a "Finecast" model works out at.
(*I didn't get any commercial discount. That was a straight Vanilla price. Which if I was a Production Manager for any model company using resin, I'd be fired if I hadn't negotiated a serious cost advantage for Bulk purchasing of the resin)

Well I don't have a finecast mini at hand, so I used the AoBR captain and his sprue. A quick eyeballing came out somewhere between 10 milliliters and 0.4 ounces. If I'm correct, then you could make close to 1500 minis!?

good point but i reckon there must be a whole bunch of other costs etc. I wonder if sculptors get paid any good?

I have to echo Tim's comment and say that it really good that a model/gaming company hold its prices in favour of its customers instead of giving in to greed.
Its just that nothing they produce attracts me.
Perhaps in the future that might change but for the moment, sorry guys no sale.

Sadly I feel the same right now. I'm really curious about the human factions in Warpath, otherwise I'm not really interested...

The new price increase probably hasn't got anything to do with gw switching to resin. Gw has always raised their prices around june. It's something every company has to do due to inflation. It simply wasn't very smart on gw's part to raise the prices with the release of finecast. I thought the price increase was due to them switching to resin at first to.
I found a great video about gw recently on miniwargaming's channel. Here's the link:

yeah the increase is just the yearly one. it has affected placcy minis equally

as for mantic. not a huge amount of their stuff grabs me, the ghouls and zeds are too samey and require many more parts other than 2 torsos and 2 legs. that said i still bought a pack as they have been handy for my zombie germans

you are right. The creators of these games saw how annoyed and unsatisfied the customers of GW were and made their games. Warmachine use to have the slogan "Stop whining and game", or something to that degree, because so many 40K players were complaining about how unbalanced the newest army was.

I don't understand all the intense GW hating, they paved the way for the likes of Malifaux and Warmachine success.
