On another note.

On the same weekend as Salute, I went to the MMS-18 (18th Moson Model Show).
The whole show is mostly military modelling (and awesome scrachbuilds), so the scifi-fantasy figures that are in excess here is a really tiny part of the whole thing.
I'm pretty sure that most people are still sorting through the pictures they have taken (there were a LOT of entries, last year there were 1189 entries, now about the same or maybe more, a friend took over 600 pics on Saturday alone), but what I could find so far:

I tried my luck with 10 entries (5 in Hobby categories, 5 in Master categories). Sadly I couldn't stay until the award-ceremony because the people I was travelling with wanted to go home, as they are not interested in miniatures and such.
But my friends stayed. They called me up at the end (I was still on the highway to home) and told me, that I actually won a bronze and a gold in 2 Hobby categories (still no idea which ones), and 2 bronze in the Master (here they said, that one of them is the "Ambush in Cadwallon" one, the other is also a mystery for now ).

To be honest I was REALLY surprised by that. From what I heard of the show I haven't thought I have a chance. Seeing the other entries on saturday only strengthened that feeling. They were awesome.

ohh, results are up.

so:
Hobby-Brush Painted - Gold : Iraem ( https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Un5oI0mSMxvhshM4zRzVzNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink )
Hobby-Fantasy Figure - Bronze: Twilight Knight ( http://www.coolminiornot.com/292774 )
Master - Diorama - Bronze : Cadwallon Ambush ( http://www.coolminiornot.com/343551 ) (No idea, how)
Master - Fantasy Figure - Bronze: Cadwallon Undertaker ( http://www.coolminiornot.com/313196) ( Again no idea how)

Weirdly my better paintings according to CMON are not there at all. Also some of the decisions are weird.

Ohh and a big lol at one category "sci-fi and fantasy models". In hungarian it's called "scifi and fantasy vehicles" and I entered a bust here based on the english entryform.

Soo, working on a not-so-well-liked bust from Taurus miniatures (at least I haven't seen any painted versions so far).

What I consider ready: hair, pullover, coat, camera. Of course unless you people say, that something is missing somewhere and I should paint it.
Based on the pic I see a few mistakes (a brown pool on the coat for example).

On the face I tried to use Chris Clayton's tutorial on the HUSH face. I'm pretty sure that I did it wrong. At least the preshadings and such are invisible so the first part is unsuccessful. Because of that I'll start with the normal shading I do for skins and finish it like that.

I love that bust. I think it's a great start. Block in the hat first before you muck with the skin tone as that will affect how the skin looks.

I think it looks completely different if you don't see the hat in there as it is now.

I like the pattern. Have fun applying it to the whole hat o_O I can't see anything that jumps out at me. I say charge forward!

I've always liked this bust too, not sure why we haven't seen any painted versions of it. I think if you try that pattern you are setting yourself up for heartbreak. She is looking very nice so far.

I think if you try that pattern you are setting yourself up for heartbreak.
it's not that bad.
I have an OLD brush for it. Originally it was a size 0 WnN7Mini, now after it lost many hairs... maybe it's a size 4/0 or so. Following the advice on the Marike Reimer DVD, I didn't throw it away and use it for freehand details.

Also on an advice I'm trying to do the patterns with a brown pen (Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen, they are basically artist inks in a pen-form).
It has a brush form, but very rigid, so the end point funtions more like a pen, but with pressure it's a bit like a normal brush.

The patterns were basically finished today, but because of my hands they need a lot of touchups with a brush + base color (and a relining with the 'pen' after that), so now I'm playing with that (base color, straighter line, base color again, etc etc)
After I have everything it'll get a quick seal with a varnish and only then I plan to darken the hollows with VMC-SepiaInk and light it with VMC-WhiteGlaze. I tried it on the small part and looks good (for me anyway).

poor bust, it's a mix of paints and inks now (GW-Washes, VMC and VAC paints (for the coat mainly), Rackham colors for the flesh (because I had only those by me last week), now the Farbel-castell pens (patterns)). I just hope there will be no need for pigments too :D

I don't know if it will be heartbreak or heartache but go for it, looking good.
it'll be a heartbleed :) (sorry couldn't resist, I still find that 'bug' funny)

Large Pic coming up.

The progress so far:

View attachment 27466

What I noticed:
- forgot to paint the ears :)
- freckles on the nose are turned out to be too big (not visible on this image, but on one, that I took from below + with a flash to see the details
- no idea what color to use for the base (Mahagony? HullRed?)

Pic is so large to see all the errors that can be found.
Also whether brush or pen I can't get straighter lines, so they'll have to do. On a smaller image it doesn't look that bad as here.

That looks great to me. Very eastern European, although I am no one to judge.

Super nit-picky criticism:

In the pic before the last one you have white right under the eye and it seems to pop the eyes but maybe is a little anime - ish? I know she has a hat on and you really did a very nice job with that shadow but maybe just a teeny tiny bit more light in the high spots?

Freckles look very natural to me. I do see one big one on the nose.

The lower lip in the leftside profile looks like it needs a tiny bit of work. The shadow at the corner of the mouth looks like it needs to be blended just little more. Either darker or lighter I can't tell.

Finally I might but a little more highlight in the hair. It looks very sort of greaqsy and punk rock to me but you could bump up your highlights with just a couple of touches of your brush and it might add some depth.

Really evocative piece though. This is top notch stuff!

Well hell, that turned out absolutely wonderful. Don't sweat the lines, they are on loose fabric so they don't have to be super tight.

Kudos on the chav hat. Brave man, to paint a pattern like that on an irregular shape. :D

Thanks for the comments.

Demihuman:
- ok as I have a bit of work on the ears, I can do the shading on the left side of the mouth too.
- hair will be tricky, as I have NO idea what I used as a base color, and the lightest shade was almost pure white, but I'll see what I can do

- and most importantly: I don't understand what you're trying to say with the eye part. Where should the lighter color go? On the eyelids or upper brow or ???

ohh and I haven't seen any painted versions before, but just today I found this one and even here on CMON: https://www.coolminiornot.com/348878
