Zab's Damn it to hell! WIP

Agreed. Let me just say I am not hate mongering here, more surprised. I went to check out GW's new sight. I love it! Very modern and clean and they brought back web exclusive minis as rewards for shopping with them - cool! The prices though? Holy crap! I haven't shopped with them for 3 years, so I had no idea. I feel as though all the complaints about their prices are actually justified. That makes me sad because I wanted to believe in them, they still make some great minis and paints. I'm just not sure they are being realistic about the value of those products when compared to what else is available out there :weep:

They get away with it, frankly, because of lack of consumer awareness. Most gamers don't care to look into other games, especially after being invested in GW. And some painters don't explore other alternatives, because they can't go to a store and see it on a shelf, or they are comfortable with the fluff, or any other number of issues. A half a year ago, I was looking into alternatives of my warriors of chaos marauders. I asked around and did a little basic research of my own. I found about 4-5 other companies. That's it. If you aren't exposed to places like CMoN and a few others, you may walk around your whole life thinking that you can count the number of manufacturers on one hand. They are like the Kleenex to bath tissue.

Ouch! Right in the wedding vegetables!
Roll with it and think thrice before yelling. The war of the roses is best won with delicate but firm diplomacy, unwavering alpha-male decisions, and the occasional suckerpunch in the form of puppydog eyes or dashing smile with a naughty twinkle in the eye.

You are dangerous sir.

Yeah I was yelling at her about that the other day and she said "You know how you asked me to warn you when you were turning into your father? It's right Now." ~sigh~ "Touche", said I.
Yep that's definitely putting the "Ouch" in "Touche"!

Those dwarves are bigger than I thought. Thank God, cause I think my eyes are going. Looks like some more prepping and priming for me next week while I start in on the Painting of the NOVA minis! Yay! At least I didn't go shooting my mouth off about others having too many projects on the go...:snicker: I see a lot of airbrushing in my future.

Well, I do like to kid. Mine always jokes with her friends that I'm in the basement taking photos with a bunch of beautiful models. When they freak out she clarifies and then says: I like his hobby. Keeps him at home, out of trouble so at least I know where my man is.

Projects No No No, Must finish one before I start another or I will end up with 3 on the go + 2 shelved for the mo.
The dwarves are a good size Im going to have fun with them, not decided how to do them yet. AB is very handy for getting a base, might be easier with a better AB hows your new toy going?

One at a time? That's just silly. I mean that would give anyone entirely to much time to hone in and work out insane details. I call shannanagins sir.

I've done a few tests with the little velocity on some paper and i found that you need waaaaaay more AB medium to get the paint out with a .02 tip and weirdly air pressure around 20-15 psi seems to be better than 30 or 10. There is definitely a sweet spot and it's going to take a lot more practice than with the patriot. If i can get the squig and dwarves prepped this weekend (sleep is for the weak) then i can prime them all with the sniper scouts next week and do a few nights of AB work on the whole bunch to lay in base colors, preshades and sketch highlights. Then I'll build some bases for the dwarves and squig when I need breaks from the details of the scouts. I'm very excited about the squig since it's my first big scale mini and it's fairly organic so i can have some real fun with bigger brushes and sponges and such to make it look more natural in an alien type way. Did i mention sleep is for the weak? :dont-know:

Hey Zab, try 25 psi with the .02. At the workshop with Aaron Lovejoy he said that is what he liked and while it seemed a little high to me it was a good all around pressure and that keeps you from fiddling with it too much. Also gives you enough oomph to clear out clogs as you go.

Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a shot when i break out my ab stuff next week. Finished priming the scouts today between household chores before the big easter gathering tomorrow. Hoping to finish prepping the squig and dwarves tonight and prime them tomorrow at lunch while we wait for company to come over. I have to sketch up some ideas for the various bases too. Right now here are my initial thoughts...

Demi dwarf base: Cobble stone with streetcar tracks to rep the doc of the bay
Canny dwarf base: rocky coastline with some breaking waves to rep the shores of that lovely land
Zab dwarf base: No idea - what the hell represents Toronto other than our giant phallic symbol The CN TOWER?

I am also thinking of putting our C'MON handles on the respective bases in dwarf runes a la Alice or my Canadian Gobo.

Giant squig base: I need to make the suggestion of a cave entrance without actually making a whole cave on the base. I'm thinking maybe a partial arch with more and more shadows to the back of the base and as digga suggested some stalagmites and stalactites. Most of the structure would be made from cork secured to the base with dowel to survive shipping.

Clearly, I have some drawing to do this week to figure out ideas on everything. I am as always open to suggestions on any of the above ideas :)

to do the knee caps of the Space marine I went down to 15 psi, after trial and trial and error and success 20-25 seems to be the bee's knee's.

Owww For Zab an Ice pick and standing on a mountain ledge. . I think I will make that for you and for Demi maybe Alcatraz escape!
I have preped my dwarfs better get priming and thinking about colours.

You'll notice the Giant squig has a broken toof. My first instinct was to fix it, but I think he actually looks tougher with a broken toof. There was barely any other cleanup to do on him and all that texture is going to be fun to play with. God bless sculptors who put in lots of texture and detail! This baby is practically going to paint itself ;) Next I gathered my material for his base...

Couldn't find what I wanted for the display block and then I found a couple of nicely aged logs in the wood pile. I'm going to hack at them with my miter saw and see if I can come up with something. The cork stoppers are for the stalactites and stalagmites and the cork trivets are to break up and use to build up a partial arch for the cave. Still not sure how to represent it without building a whole cave...:dont-know: The cubes are for the dwarves.

Oh crap, I better get cracking on the dwarves. I am liking the dock theme. I have to do some research on you guy's respective home lands.

The Squig does look darn good primed.
