Zab I took your comment to heart about too many projects and organized the Doom Closet, It's not too bad now. Plus I now have boxes labeled Cthulu Diorama and 1/72 WWII Diorama :)

I have also been tinkering with a base for my hellbrute in the 'ol Kaos Garage. I got an idea when I did the Dragon Dio and later on the Grot/Kan guy about how to do some lava OSL and so now I am going to try it out. Starting with some basic cork:

I glued up some layers to create some height

View attachment 27098

And then chewed them up with my fingernail and an xacto knife. I will paint the actual 60mm base to look like LAVA

View attachment 27099

Then over the top of that I made this nice little frame work from the end of a toy fire trucks ladder. If you are like me you spend a lot of time at play grounds (with my kids, perv-o) and all kids love fire trucks, luckily the best part always breaks off first. so next time you are baby sitting keep your eyes open!

Added a bit of grill from an old speaker

View attachment 27088

I added a wire and some fake brackets to give more surface area to the glue joints. Hopefully add some strength. The wire is just regular wire, left over from some car project that I botched no doubt, and the little brackets are made from styrene tube from the railroad hobby store. Note my pin holes to attach this part to the base.

The Dark Vengeance Hellbrute is standing on what, I suppose, is some broken concrete. So I broke up some scraps of cast resin that I had left over from casting something. The left over resin got poured into the bottom of one of those little plastic clam shells that sushi from the grocery store comes in. (that's right, sushi from the grocery store :) and it has some nice ridges. The little piece in the photo ^^ is going to help make the 'concrete' that GW attached to the Brutus' foot fit the base and give me a nice place to add a pining point.

View attachment 27090

I added some more 'concrete' and pinned him. No glue yet, of course. But now I have gap on the other foot shown here.

View attachment 27091

To fix the gap I just slid some more base under that foot while Brutus is in place. I guess I could have used some more 'concrete' but I have these weird plastic ties laying around that sort of look like girders or very small ladders so I used a bit of that. You can see my hi-tech clamping rig.

View attachment 27092

And there he is on his base. But I still have three separate components. The actual base, the girder and mesh platform, and Brutus himself. Hopefully this will allow me to spray up onto the girder with the airbrush to create an OSL effect.

Might need to add some more wreckage. Ooh, I forgot the guitar strings! But you get the idea.

What do you think?

That shit is awesome. GOOD CALL ON THE OSL FOR THIS ONE!!! I think it will look very menacing with e added height too so make sure you take some nice low angle shots for the gallery pics ;) I'm always trolling the playgrounds for hobby stuff when I take my kid too. I bet I look pretty crazy covered in tattoos, talking to pieces of bark, bottling up sand and putting rocks in my pockets :smirk:

Wow. Zab is right he does look pretty menacing and deserves some low angled shots. In my opinion glue him down and call him good cause he already beats the hell out of all my painted stuff hahaha. Seriously I can't wait to see him painted, this is going to be awesome.

And Zab its only crazy/creepy when you go to the park and do that without a kid lol.

I'm telling you guys, this is a great model!

Here he is after his AB base coating.

Basically that's black primer, layer of Stone Grey from 45º below then Rosy Skin with Pale Violet from above and finally added abunch of Linen White to the mix for head focused highlight.

I wanted it look a little more grey like AndyG's Badass Elephant God but I am liking the mutant flesh bubble gum look a lot too.

My next step will be to trace in a bunch of blue and red veins then go over that with a wash for shadows

I also primered the base and the cork came out a kinda crappy. You could really see the lines between the different pieces of cork so I added some dirt with PVA glue:

And I got the basic colors done for my 40K Fop. Also started on some stripey pants :)

I will be toning the TMM gold way down. I am going to turn his powder horns into bottles

Nice progress. The helbrute is my least fave model from the dv set although it did turn out being one of my best. I think it's the big broad areas that you can play with color modulation that makes it so easy to just add detail and go crazy.

SChaWIng! That is an awesome start, love the base and pinky skin is a good choice I think.
You could even do a marble styled take on the skin with the red, black, purple to make him look a little tortured and painful. there are other "how to's" but I think this one particularly would look quite good on skin, Chest of colours how to paint marble base.

Thanks guys, Canny I have seen that WIP before and I think that is sort of where I am going. I also really want to try out some of Sprockets veiney skin techniques. Here is what I have so far on Brutus:

View attachment 27150

Pretty subtle, but the look is what I am after. I want to try and create some depth, a lot like the marble, so I will be going back and forth a few times with veins and washes.

I also did a wash on his plates and I am not sure what I think of it. It reminds me of rust but I have been painting too much rust lately. I took a look at the Lexicanum and pretty much all the chaos marines are red and black. There are some pretty nice flat surfaces on his front. Maybe some sort of spider web pattern or like fat cells?

I also made a plinth! It was a lot easier then I thought it would be. Just cut it out as square as I could get it, trued it up with 80 grit sand paper and then sanded up through a couple of stages to 600 grit. I dusted it off and used the air brush to varnish it with gloss Vallejo. Sanded that down with 1000 grit added another layer and sanded a few times and after about an hour it looks pretty great! The photo is a little blurry but its pretty decent. It will be replacing the bottle cap on the base of the sword maiden.

I also have some bad news... I dropped the 40k Fop. Both guns and the sword broke off. He is easily fixable, but is in the Doom closet for know :(

Sorry to hear about the drop, hate it when that happens, great looking plinth. Colour wise on the hellbrute lots of other colour schemes for the armour if you go back through older codexes

Good stuff on the skin, bummer about the drop, love the plinth. What color are you hoping to use on the armour mainly? Blue, green, purple, red, black, grey, white are all various legion colors.

Thanks Guys,

Here is a quick update on the face:

View attachment 27295

Face is basically white with GW Baal Red wash and then some GW Leviathan Purple wash in the corners and some Reaper Pine Green to add contrast in the darkest shadows. Teeth/claw things are also Baal red and Sepia wash

I am just not sure what to do on the armor. I was thinking about it a bunch but didn't come up with anything. The top of the shoulder plates are screaming for some freehand and I really want to do some sort of free form pattern. Hopefully I will get inspired as I paint everything else.

Simplest would be to carry the veins into the armor plate to show the continued morphing of man and machine.

Lol....what is it with you and paisley? What is paisley for that matter?
Other than a town in Scotland, Paisley pattern is based on a middle eastern design brought back to the UK from India/Afganistan/Persia region.
It's been adopted into a coloured patterning on ties and shawls for many a year.
Quite often it's yellow/gold on a red background, but blue and greens backgrounds are not uncommon.

And yes I had a paisley tie as a kid!
