I wanted to sound cool and super expert-like and find something for you to improve upon. No dice. It's perftec ;)

I think I like the colors you used on the spear blade the most. Came out so damn good. Great work.

Hey Sproket, your work is great. Thanks so much for sharing and providing inspiration. It's a nice distraction for my own work in the studio every day :) just don't tell my boss!

Nope I feel young and virile! Just because I have a paunch Father Christmas would be proud of and I have less hair than a tonsured monk that makes no difference honest.......sniff..I'm going to go and be alone now with my 80's music collection.

80's well you are truly young... shuffles back into my cave to dig out some Simon and Garfunkel and some other stuff I grow up with....takes comfort that I don't have and 78 rpm records in my collection.

The more I experiment with varnish the less I like the effect! I'm going to leave the frog as it is, I think a shiny finish would spoil the look of him. I will probably matt down some of Squarg's gear to provide a contrast and put a little gloss on the frog's eyes.

Oh yes! My first ever GD wins from 1987. I just knew someone was going to do this to me this week. It's my birthday at the weekend and I'm feeling a little sensitive about certain things. Now where did I leave that 'Just for men' beard dye?

Congrats too your birthday, whatever day it is :) and nice too see your older work, the hobby and quality have really moved forward a lot since that competition, the pictures put it in perspective for me. Thanks for sharing.

I was wrong; those minis won GD in 1988. I didn't qualify in 1987 and missed out on the first GD finals! Bitterness at that has fueled my painting ever since. Joking aside it was probably my perceived failure that drove me to do better and led to later success.

Yes you do! It took me 25 years of plodding along and I see no reason why anyone else should be allowed to do it any faster. You will also need to take a few years out from the hobby so that you have to start out all over again.:laugh:

Yes they are. I still have all my old demon winners tucked away in the figure cabinet. I've even got a few painted minis from my school days up in the attic. They wither away as I stay eternally young!

I have a huge affection for the 'old school' style of painting. Sadly I think a lot the fun & whimsy have gone from mini painting. But developments in the technical side of the hobby have advanced what is possible beyond all recognition. We all have so many more tricks, techniques and shared knowledge to call upon but at the end of the day it's still an individual painters skills and vision that make the difference. When all is said and done I think the hobby has grown up over the last ten years or so and the best is yet to come.

I love waking up every morning and relish in going onto sprockets blogspot and read the newest news he has on his w I p or if there's nothing new I reread your past techniques ever trying to get some of your well sentenced techniques somewhat in my brain. If you say that the best is yet to come for miniature painting then I solemnly believe that best will be from you .I'm sure I seal for all when I say your failures may have fueled your future success , but your future success fuels all artists alike to strive bigger and better ! Thank you mr soper. Thank you for all you've given to the greatest hobby in the world!

Your paint job makes him look so animated, have to agree that people should paint what and how they want (this is where the fun comes in) and never be afraid to try new things (once saw a marine army painted pink, called the Barbie marines) definite whimsy !
Enjoy other peoples work let it inspire and drive you forward ( why I visit your threads)
And last but not least Happy Birthday for this week
