Never enough hours in the day.
Okay gang - if you haven't heard about
Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar get thee hence to their website and/or FB page. lol!
Let me back the truck up a little. In 2013 when I went to RNConvention in Las Vegas (I was signing books and presenting workshops), it turned out to be the same time as the Las Vegas Star Trek convention. So of course there was no way I was leaving Vegas without popping in to that convention for at least one day. I got to meet a few actors and was perusing the vendor room when I literally stumbled into Richard Hatch (he was Apollo on the original Battlestar Galactica series). Being a long time fan I stopped and chatted. I mentioned I was having a book signing at another convention and we chatted about writing but he (very good-naturedly of course) kinda gave me a bad time about not only being an indie but being a romance author on top of it. (I also write scifi/fantasy). Of course I'm used to that so I'm prepared with the industry numbers. Anyway, like I said, he was very nice and then we started talking medieval history and the like - he's almost as big of a medieval nut as I am. lol! His response is something I deal with all the time so I'm used to it - no big deal.
Well I did start following his facebook page and the next thing I know - he's playing a Klingon on Prelude to Axanar. Get this it's an Indie production! In fact they've got a Kickstarter going right now. But the Prelude trailer is freakin' awesome! They kicked off their promotion at San Diego Comic Con. I was at RNConvention in Vegas again this year but unfortunately the Star Trek Convention was a few weeks later.
But then I found out the folks were going to be at Houston Con including Richard Hatch. I had also read an article about Richard's talk at Comic Con and it seems he has an new outlook on this indie thing.

Okay, now I have got to go talk to him. Besides, I love what they're doing with Axanar so I'm going to go network with other indies no matter what media they are in. I talk my hubby and son into going. Hubby hasn't been to a con since 1989, hasn't heard about Axanar and this is my son's first con. They're dragging their feet but I know they are going to love this. So I get both in a headlock and off we go.
As cons go Houston Con is relatively small so this is a perfect venue to talk to folks. We get there and I track down Richard Hatch. Of course he meets so many people, he doesn't remember me from Adam - but I remind him of the conversation and he starts remembering. "So how's being an indie author going?" he asked.
"I'm an Amazon Top 100 author in my genre," I reply.
His jaw hits the floor. Anyway, we kept chatting and he's asking me all these questions and my husband's there of course hubby is my best cheerleader. Anyway, Hatch ends up asking me for a writing sample and to bring it to a workshop he's doing on Sunday. Wonderful. (After that workshop he also tells me I need to get into theater - like I don't have enough irons in the fire already! lol!)
After that I end up talking to everyone involved with the production and networking with them. By the time the weekend was over, they were calling me by name and we were having a grand time. lol! J.G. Hertzler even hugged my feet because I brought them drinks while they were on stage for a Q & A and they asked for them a couple of times but no one got up and got them anything. I was like geez - I'll go get them. lol!
Anyway, we attended the screening of Prelude and my hubby and son were officially hooked (if meeting the people hadn't done it already). I also got to talk to Christian Gossett who is the director. He is also a miniature painter and was with Sideshow for a time.
All in all it was a great time and the Axanar project is something that is absolutely fantastic - check it out - you won't believe it's indie!
Now, I get to bust open some stuff that came while I was gone and decide what I get to paint.
But one thing I really want to do is kit-bash an Ares star ship. hehe!
