Yeah you really caught a nice texture there. I love the yellow. I was really curious how you would get it to tie in. The belts set off the shirt and pants nicely too.

Even if you want to be historically accurate that era still gives you a lot of freedom in your color choices. Take the French Hussar, for example. You've got 14 different regiments each with their own color scheme to pick from. The dragoon isn't quite as flexible, still I could have gone with scarlet, crimson, pink, yellow or orange for the details. Plus the French Revolution and rise/fall of Napoleon provides some interesting historical background. So that and the ancients (Romans/Greeks) are probably the two historical periods I find most compelling. I've also got a random assortment of knights, pirates, and samurai somewhere in my pile of unpainted figures.

My dad's area of interest is the Civil War. But back when he painted he said he got bored of painting dark blue or grey over and over again. He started to paint mostly zouaves because at least that gave him some color variation.

A very interesting time for combat, that is for sure. If you are into Computer games at all, then I highly reccomend the Total War series of games. Notably, Rome TW, Empire TW, and Napoleon TW. If anything, it'll give you an appreciation for the types of units and their usage on the battlefield. Very cool game that is also extremely realistic representation of large scale, formation based combat. Also includes a Shogun and Medieval version. I am anticipating a Civil War version soon.

Sure it is bailey, I mean I pretty much have it figured out, but the part I don't get is how did you get the reinactor to sit still long enough for you to hit him with your shrink ray, which I presume you got off eBay. Yep. I'm on to your shin shinnanagins sir. ;)

Digganob, don't forget that as an engineer I have access to all sorts of fun toys! Oh, and congrats on making post 666 in this thread.
BFK, I may have to check some of those out. I used to really enjoy games like that, although lately I've been sacrificing my video gaming time in favor of more painting. :smile:

I did a little more detail work on the Dragoon.

The hands got some of the same glazing treatment as the face. It's subtle and a bit hard to see in those pictures so here's a close up. Just adding a bit of red and purple to the shadows and some extra red around the knuckles. Sorry, the picture isn't exactly in focus as the camera was pointed at the full figure and not just the hand.

And, while I was at it, I did a little tweaking on Sumothay's face. Remember him? Well I haven't totally forgotten. I really need to make a base for this guy. Hopefully once I finish the Dragoon I'll try to finish off Sumothay as well.

oof! I forgot about that dark brooding SOB. Such a nice job on him! Maybe a base with lots of tall dried grass like some kind of Mongolian plains would set his reds off nicely.

WOW that's some underbite on Sumothay its like, "Hey which f*cking jokers got my top set of false teef I swear ill slit you a new one if I don't get em back NOW!!" ;) seriously though that's a cool figure the flesh tones on his face and the shading is top notch.

Thanks, guys. Andy, yeah, he's got quite the funky face. Not the most realistic proportions but tons of character!

Zab, I've got an idea for the base but it's going to require a bit of sculpting. That's one of the reasons he got bumped from the painting station. Sculpting is definitely not my strength, I'm still at the play-doh level. So I very well might scrap the whole idea. We'll see!

Bailey, I hate to be the one to say it but that was post 866 for Digganob. Think you've been staring at tiny miniatures for too long :)

I think you should go with a living base. I've had the recent idea of buying a miniature bonsai tree and planting it in a hollowed out section of a plinth. Then add a couple other Asian themes here and there. Idk an idea.

haha I got the post of the beast. I am just that awesome, so awesome I might be willing to help sculpt something for a certain base should one feel the need to ask. Also Mr. Engineer, you need to engineer something for me because my jaw keeps hitting the floor when I see your work, maybe The Bailey Chin Catcher 3000 or something like that... Sumothay banner is so awesome and I love the color scheme you chose.

For reals, do the bonsai!!! I have been dying to try this but but I'll have to paint up a kabuki or something first and with my speed of painting that will be a year. On the west coast there are a ton of places that sell a variety of bonsai. Basically any tree can be miniaturized. So I'd go for like a Japanese Maple or something. It's twisty and gnarly looking. Or a flowered on. Take a plinth , hollow out enough room for the roots, then put a drain hole at the bottom of this ( for watering). Put in the tree, fill hole with sand and rocks then a top layer of something to hide the dirt that can still be removed-like moss. If you prune the roots and twigs properly it'll never grow out of the base. You could also get one with gorgeous flowers all over it. Google.

There is a whole sub culture of people out there that do fairy gardens. These tiny magical worlds with mini plants and decorations. Looks very cool. Was wondering why I don't see our hobby and that one combined more often.

Digganob, thanks for the offer but I kind of wanted to try some sculpting myself. It hopefully won't be too complicated so I thought it would be a good starter project.

BFK, the idea is very tempting. I've got a 90mm Ronin figure from Pegaso that I hope to get to in the next year or so. I just might try to pair him with a bonsai base.

Dragonsreach, yeah, looks pretty close. :smile:
