Actually that's good point Demi. Why the hell are you looking to get artists to come teach seminars? Shouldn't you be teaching them yourself there Mr. Powell?

Ha, well I've seen myself paint. The end result might be okay, but everything up until that point is slow and probably not that interesting. I have done one short demo for the group and I'm planning another one soon, but that's where I'm most comfortable. Besides, I want to bring in someone else so I can take the class too!

Thanks, Krule!

I've made some progress on the Northumbrian figure. I'm making some tweaks to my usual mixes in order to get the cold feel I'm going for. Maybe not big changes, but enough to push me out of my comfort zone. Here's a close up look at the face.

After the face was complete I put on the nose guard. Certainly much easier to paint the face without that on there. I then started on the metals. Instead of my usual brown undercoat I switched to dark blue. I also mixed in a bit of the blue (along with the black) into the metallic shadows. I still plan to do some glazing on the helmet, but I'm waiting until I get the chainmail further along so I can do it at the same time.

By the way, since we've gotten into this whole historical discussion, I thought I'd mention that this helmet sculpt is based on an actual 8th century find, the Coppergate helmet. The real helmet has some neat design work on it. While the scale is too small to include on the figure's helmet, it will provide some very helpful inspiration when I start on the shield design and the border on his tunic.

Hey look, we can post again! Thanks, delta and Krule. Yeah, he definitely looks like he's had a rough day.

On a side note, I didn't mention it in the last post but I'm planning to put together a full step by step on this figure. Most likely it will go in a future issue of Figure Painter magazine. I'll keep you all posted in case you want to check it out.

I've been working on the metals for this guy. The detail on the chainmail sculpt is really fine. Probably a lot more realistic compared to what's on other figures... but it's also a lot more of a pain to paint. Dry brushing and washes aren't going to cut it here, so there is a lot of going in and adding individual dots of color. It's starting to look like I want it. I will hopefully post some more pictures tonight or tomorrow.

Here's the updated version with the armor. The chain mail was a pain, but I'm happy with the end result.

I also put together this side by side image showing how the helmet came together. It started out with a dark metallic base, Black Metal mixed with Pure Black and Ritterlich Blue (image on the left). From there I gradually mixed in a light metal color (Scale75's Heavy Metal), focusing on the normal highlight areas and the edges. I also did a bit of black lining to bring out the creases between the metallic plates. I repeated the process for the yellow metal as well (middle image). Finally I went in with blue, purple, and black glazes using the Scale75 inks. These focused more on the shadow areas, adding a bit of color and helping to further develop the darker areas (image on the right). The effect is subtle but if you compare the 2nd and 3rd image you can see the difference it makes. I did the same thing on the chain mail.

I have this figure sitting in my grey army and I'm saving these pics as reference. That face is incredible! Maybe you can add some rust spots on the metal parts and even some blood staind would look good on them, just don't add too much. If it was mine i would also add some silver highlights on the top part of the helmet as this is the part that catches the most light. Just some thoughts though. Looking forward to see this one develop.

Cheers,

Gino

Thanks, Epic and Gino!

Gino, yeah, I plan to do some weathering on this guy although I save most of that until the end. I'm going to be a bit more conservative with the amount of rust and blood stains I put on him, since I'm trying to keep to an overall cool look. While a lot of red would defeat that, I think a little bit would stand out nicely. That's another reason I'm saving it until the end. I'll be able to see how everything looks together at that point and hopefully get the color balance I want.

As for the silver highlights, there are some on the top of the helmet. I went up to Scale75's Speed Metal which is the lightest they have aside from their White Alchemy paint. Part of the reason you don't see it is the light is coming from more to the front of the figure than from above. I posted this photo of my light setup a while back. As a result the top of the helmet isn't getting direct light and doesn't shine as much as it does in normal room lighting. I've seen some people mix in matte white with their metal highlights because of this sort of thing. It's an interesting idea that I have yet to experiment with. I will take another look at the figure in normal lighting and perhaps add some white alchemy to the top of the helmet.

Hi Bailey, I found that by painting a bit of a warm colour it can make the cool colours even colour like red vs blue. As for the high highlights on metals I always use a bit of super silver by Vallejo. It's a colour I bought many years ago and I think it is no longer produced. Strange thing is that, although it was made by Vallejo, it had to be thinned with turps! A silver metallic pencil works great too. Mine's by Karisma colour. BTW, your blue is spectacular also. If you don't mind sharing I would be interested in your mix.

Best wishes,

Gino(2dope)

Can i suggest gloss white with the metallics and if you want really shockingly dark dark gloss black for the deepest recesses. It a trick i picked up at Fernando's workshop this summer. For some reason basing your weathered and beaten metals in gloss makes the shadows really deep o_O

Your metals are always so good. Looking forward to the chainmail bit of your SBS, there's some on my current project and I am just not sure how to handle it.

Thanks!

Sionid, the chainmail on this guy was a pain! The gaps between sections were pretty shallow, so I wasn't really able to rely on dry brushing. I did the first dark metal coat that way, but the lighter layers were mostly done by going in and painting individual sections (with maybe a little more dry brushing here and there). The good news is, since it's mostly small dots, you don't need a ton of layers to get a decent blend. I jumped around a bit when I was applying the lighter layers so the boundaries between the areas weren't too clean. Sort of like how I did the scales on Sorondil. The highlight dots drifted a bit into other regions just like the black scales sneak into the red sections.

And I used the glazes on the mail just like the helmet. I applied it in large areas to reinforce the shadows. And then I also applied it in smaller spots, short horizontal lines, so help differentiate between the rows of the mail.

I'm not sure if that description made as much sense as I'd like, but hopefully it helps. Of course this all assumes you're using TMM. If you're going to do NMM chainmail, then I've got no clue how to go about that!
