I've decided to put my big girl panties on and brave setting up this WIP thread.

The project I'm about to start on is this:

His name is Wong from the Malifaux range. I fell in love the second I saw him. He's just so delightfully diabolical with a side order of adorable.

Painting wise I'm going to go with quite a bright and colourful scheme as I think it'll suit the "character" of the sculpt.

Thanks for stopping by TristanGST. :)

Most of the minis that are easily available here in South Africa are GW. There's one shop that carries a small stock of Malifaux and Hordes figures (they're currently closed for relocating which is a pain) and I've really liked what I've seen of the Malifaux range so far.

I'm excited to paint him, but he's quite a small mini so I hope I can still do a good job with him. We'll see.

Go big or go home!

One of the things that intimidates me about mini painting is shading/highlighting skin realistically and also hair.

I've also wanted to try my hand at painting a bust.

So I thought to myself: "Why not combine these two?" Here's the bust I'm going to start slowly working on (the box art really doesn't do the sculpt any justice):

I've opted to leave the odd front piece off her helmet and eliminated the spikes and odd curly bit of armour over her left shoulder (really didn't look good). So her left breast has been left bare and I've used the "cover-up" piece as a detail on her armour.

I'm super keen to start working on this tonight but also terrified!

Wish me luck! (Any hints or advice are always welcome)

Verlinden She Warrior - Ready to Start

So here she is in all of her primed glory:

I'm going to paint her (well, at least try) with auburn/red hair and lightly tanned Caucasian skin. I don't want her to be all steel and gold like she is on the box art (see previous post). As a fantasy figure (she's part of Verlinden's fantasy range) - I want to give her a bit more colour and interest so I'm going to give her green enameled armour.

Anyhow, that's the plan. As usual any thoughts are welcome.

Verlinden - there's a name I haven't heard in ages. Excellent choice. I've been wanting to try a bust myself. Just need to get one!

One of the nearby model shops has a whole bunch of oldish Verlinden kits. There are a couple of other busts, but this was the only female one. Depending on how this one goes I may try my hand at some of the others.

Busy painting her eyes at the moment - fun but terrifying!

Hey Digga. :D Welcome to my little slice of CMON. Good to have you on board.

I'll post a pic once I get her eyes done. Just gotta go for it.

nice. I'll be painting up my first bust soon too for an exchange with a fellow artist. I'm doing up the steam punk leia from here on cmon. For your bust's skin i would look into wet blending and maybe wet palette as techniques for smooth skin. Failing that start higher than normal with your basecoat and glaze darker. Ask baileyo3 and andyG or milosh if he's still checking his account for tips on lots of skin. Keep the contrast lower than normal on her skin so she doesn't look so manish. For her hair, look online for those shiny hair pantene ads and such for reference on shiny and luster :)

Hi Zab. Thanks - you'll be proud, I actually set up a wet palette for this job. :) I figure that I'm going to be doing a lot of thin layers to try and keep her looking natural.

My Google-fu is all over hair references!

I'll drop those guys a PM - have sent a couple already to members whose bust work I liked. No replies yet, but I was taking a chance.

Let me know when you start work on the bust - I'd love to know how you find it.

I second Bailey and Andy. Both are still pretty active and love to help.
Milosh is great, but I haven't seen him around in ages.

Interesting choices and quite different from each other.
Milosh is very active on facebook and setting up a range of milosh approved miniatures which look fantastic !

Hey wargamesculptor - nice to see you. :)

I like models with "personality", so I've got an interesting little collection waiting for me to work on (I'm also somewhat limited to what is available here in South Africa). Sometimes I'll pick up a mini because it has a detail I think that I need to work on - eg. fur or a lot of cloth. So some of those have snuck in to my collection as well. It is the bonus of being solely a painter (my boyfriend and some friends do wargame, but it's never really interested me much) because I get to pick and choose models without worrying about which army/faction they are a part of.

Sound's like a great way to approach your painting experience, what's it like trying to get models from overseas, do you have a large import duty to pay ? There is an ever expanding range of models available from some great companies and I know a lot of people on this site have posted bits for other members in the past
