Congrats buddy it was great to meet you and Bailey this year! It was an amazing time getting to judge both your pieces close up! And very well deserved on both of your placements in Best of Show!

Hi all!
I have been out for about a month to move the fam to a new place. It's just down the road from our old place but a much nicer spot. I have not had much time for mini work but I have been scratching away at my Dark Age CORE Pathfinder and I finally have some WIP shots to share. Check it out:
Oh, it seems like the forum post interface has gotten even more wonky while I have been gone... what a lovely surprise.
Anyhow, The Pathfinder mini is pretty cool and if I were more in the mood it has a ton of potential to be modified. I think the thorax part could be a great basis for some kind of corrupted Eldar titan or something. It has a bunch of sculpted in battle damage, scratches and bumps and what-not. My previous experience is that these can be really frustrating to work with if you try to deal them individually and really focus on those details. I am not going to do that. Instead I am going to treat this guy more like a vehicle or even a piece of terrain and paint him relatively quickly. Also going TMM pretty burnt out on the NMM. He is really big when assembled, too big to fit on the supplied base and the way the legs are cast makes him a little hard to pose. I came really close to cutting them all up, but I want this to be sort of an easy in-between project.
So my next step is to get some primer on him and then a few airbrushed base coats of metallics. He comes apart easy so I can paint the base separate.

It was fun and easy. Took about an hour. $25 seems like a lot for a few pieces of plastic, but I think I spent $16 on one sheet of brass etch palm fronds that was only good for one project. With the tentacle maker I could theoretically have infinite tubes and tentacles all with no mold lines. It's nicely made and has some really good tut's on their website. If you are planing on customizing some scifi models I think it is great purchase

Nice work. Its not how much you hobby, its that you hobby at all I ran into some lovely dry rot at the family cottage this weekend. Time to rip open the walls, remove the side porch and see if this is ongoing water seepage or just a "simple" replacement of old lumber and sistering of joists and beams and studs and flooring. Yay. Also time to take pics and check with the insurance co re coverage. Maybe max out the fire coverage and light a match or two -_- Who am I kidding that place is so damp it will never catch

Oistene, I wanted to try and tilt up the three little grates to make that more of a face. I am going to do some OSL there and wanted that bit between his disc brake grinder appendages to be up a little. I also sculpted a little baby Pathfinder to be hiding under the platform he is standing on.
I got some basecoating with the air brush in today. I primered black, then built up a couple of highlight areas with dark, then light, grays. Basically I am doing the same thing as you would with zenithal priming but instead of coming straight down on the mini I picked some spots on the base and then on mini to have general highlights.
Then I went over it all with some really thinned down P3 Pig Iron and finally, some P3 Quick Silver through the airbrush as well. These two P3 paints are pretty good substitutes for Citadel Boltgun Metal and Mithril Silver respectively. I know there are better metallics out there but I like the oily look of these and they are on hand. Before I finish I will probably break out some Tamiya Flat Aluminum for final metallic highlights.
You can see the gradient I made with the grays really well on the platform piece in the picture below.
Here is a shot of my Venerable VL Paasche Airbrush. I don't think shooting metallic paint through the Iwata would be a good idea. I almost tossed my Paasche but Mr. Airhead set me straight!
You may notice that I have a Grex in line pressure regulator attached to it. The regulator works for the Iwata too and it's totally sweet. A really nice deal for $26 or whatever. It let's you go all the way down to zero air pressure with out any adjustment on your compressor.
All right next step I thing is going to be doing some washes to get some quick shadows going. I might throw some decals on this big guy too.
