I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this because I'm loving that reference picture you have there and I'm really curious what your rendition of it will look like.

I'm no sculptor at all so not tips on that part apart from the fact I'm liking the rocky outcrop as well ;)

Have fun with that and keep us posted :p

@TheCorax - Welcome to my little corner of CMON. Good to have you on board. :) I'm still working on her face which is taking me a while to get right. But I'm having fun learning as I go and will hopefully have something to post soon. The flu has kept me away from things for a few days, but I'm starting to feel human again!

haha great minds think alike. i might draw you up something to sculpt after you finish this project, what would you like?

Ooh that would be awesome! I like mythological beasties, angels (of the more kick-ass kind), pandas and cats. But as our minds seem to stumble down similar pathways you could just go ahead and surprise me. Thank you for the offer and the thought! :)

@meaty_nosebleeds - Sounds good to me. :) You've got an idea of my basic skills and style so it should be fun. And that guy's art is amazing - thanks for the link!

Sphinx Update 1

I have conquered the flu and got back to sculpting!

I tried for quite a while to get the Sphinx's head right using Fimo Soft. I really like the clay, but it wasn't quite right for the work I was trying to do. So I switched to Sculpey Medium Blend which I really like working with. And I finally have something I'm happy with! So as promised I have some pictures for you guys. :D

As a reminder of what I'm working towards here's the original image:

And here's what I've managed to do with it:

I'm not going to do her headdress yet because I think it'll make working on the body once I've attached the head more challenging than it needs to be. So next step is the lion's body. Some of the detail around her eyes will be painted in once she's done.

Question: I was considering giving her wings after the style of the Greek Sphinx. Any thoughts?

So my first face! (Well, that's not a chibi)

Let me know your thoughts. :)

Lol! I (and Google) will be happy to enlighten you.
1) Diving in head first usually means to take on a project without thinking about it - being reckless in other words.
2) Jumping in feet first means to approach a task or project with very little hesitation or fear.

Hope that helps! :)

And I'm glad that you like where she is so far.

And 'jumping out of bed onto damaged wrist' is a metaphor for 'I'm a crazy sumbitch'. :)

lovely clean finish on the on the head so far, Arch. Not sure about the nose, but the lips and eyes look exceptional.

@bgcdazzler - Wow thank you! In the reference image she has a cat's nose so I tried to replicate that. I think it'll come together a bit more with the headdress in place. But I do see your concern - it's the part of the face that I've gone backwards and forwards over the most trying to get it to look like something. Decided it was time to move on though. I appreciate your critical eye being cast over her.

Damn Meaty you distracted me with this awesome artists work. Thanks for sharing.
thanks krule and arch. hs work is really spectacular isn't it?

your sphinx is looking awesome so far arch, i see some parts on the nse that need to be smoothed and evened out but that's about it so far. as for the wings idea, i think it would be great! if you are going for a pose simmilar to the one in your reference image, i'd suggest leaving them folded on her body though.
good luck sculpting all those feathers

@meaty_nosebleeds - Thank you Claire. :) She will probably get a bit more work done on her face towards the end (sanding etc), but I appreciate you pointing those uneven areas out.

I thought something similar about the wing position - not sure if it would detract from the pose in general though to add wings. I guess I'll see how she looks with a body first. You may be asked the same question down the line so be warned. :)

@KruleBear - By "nupeck" I assume you mean "neck"? :) It's a basic structure I'm working on to keep the head off the flat surface of the table and allow me to twist it to get different viewpoints. Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you like her so far (nupecks aside :p).

Looking good, the profile looks right, front on the bottom of the face needs thining as when you add the hair it could start to look chibi again. Glad the flu has gone

@WGS - Thank you so much. :) I know which area you're talking about - I'm going to leave it for now and possibly shave some off later. Thanks for the feedback!
