The color scheme you've applied for these latest genestealers really force the yellows to pop. You've preserved your dark and realistic style as your painting has changed a bit over the last several months, but you're really doing a fantastic job of pulling out tiny points of interest on your models.

Thanks fox, oct, krule and toad thanks you. The fun of this hobby in my eyes is how everybody ,along with myself , has the ability to evolve our skills. It can be dramatic or slow, but nomatter what this leads to improvement ,different ideas as well as some things staying the same.i appreciate you taking the time to reaffirm my feelings as well that it has changed a bit but still holds tight to the style I've worked so hard to refine and sharpen over the last 4 years on CMON!;)

Most definitely you deserve to feel pride in both the works you've created and the talents you've accessed within yourself. I love your work, but I expect you to get way better in the years ahead (I hope I, too, can pull that off). Most importantly, I think your personal example proves the essential lesson best: to improve, practice.

BAM Arena rex miniatures tempted me a couple of times, but haven't bought any for the moment. In any case they are almost designed for you Jhon, I am sure you will have tons of fun with them. By the way those skintones are Terrific! ^^

This forum needs a "like" button sometimes :p

Well, it's not exaclty the same, but you got the reputation button, I usually use it when someone posts a great tip or advice, but in this case it also deserves it xD

Excellent work on the gladiators so far. Arena Rex does make some fine looking models. I hope they're back at Adepticon this year, and carrying extra stock of Nero riding the bull.

You've got a Thrax (Thracian) in the middle and a murmillo to the right. Is the murmillo's helmet styled as a fish? For what it's worth, this particular match-up was one of the favorites of Roman gladitorial audiences.
The third guy, while not implausible, is sort of a weirdo. He's a scissor, I guess, though I don't know much of anything about them.
I love the skin tones on the scissor! The faces on the Thrax's armor are also really cool.

I think the Murmillo is my favorite, also. If you tell me that's a fish (it should be) on his helmet, it's definite!

Will you be adding little pops of brighter colors on e.g. feathers, skirts, etc.? For instance, I think the little bits of strong (though not bright) green in the very warm, largely orangish-red color scheme of your recent Khorne figures really adds a lot of visual interest to those models. I think these gladiators could be even a bit more flamboyant than the fantasy unit! Remember, these were the NFL/Premier League stars of their day (chariot-racing serving as
NASCAR-/Formula 1-style entertainment). Like our 'heros' they did dress up in ludicrous colorful uniforms. After all, they realistically might die in them, so they wanted to look scary and cool! At the very least, the dealers, fight brokers, and gladiator schools that owned and trained fighters (often) play essentially the same role in shaping public opinion as they did 2,000 years ago. Chased relief sculptures of fish on murmillo helmets (which is a decorative, rather than a practical design) speak to the same basic phenomenon.
Anyway, I know you are a true believer in the church of painting realism, though you're very tolerant and appreciative of other approaches, so I just want to give my professional blessing to you going over the damn top on these bad boys! Win the historical category this year, John... we all want you to grab the trophy, bark out "Are You Not ENTER-TAAAAINed", and rush off with Janet in hot pursuit as you rush to the airport to catch a flight home...

Actually except for the shields I'm keeping everything very basic. It's basic skin recipe I've used in the past. And the metals are quite simple with some brass, steel (used and abused) . I'm a very basic painter when it comes to competition. I keep many things simple and really just use what my strengths are. This way if I try to pull off something I'm not used too , I've learned that can drag a model down as opposed to execution of what I know. This way they only judging on my strengths you see. ;) . However I stick with cracks in the leather and small thin scrapes rather than spots here and there , some blood and skin that has deep blue cool shades carried over to there sheilds. This is balanced out by my beiges and browns of really analogous colors which I've chosen for these guys. Ill cap it off with this very cool looking sand recipe with footprints in it by Oliver spath. Really excellent painter from bell of lost souls. That's really the vision I have for this unit. Lets not forget that they might merge categories again who knows. :/
