Hi,
I put up my latest mini,
Aztec Priestess from First Legion. I've painted this for a long time, and to be honest it was not an easy task, I struggled a lot, with basic things like full body nude skintones. And there are no WIPs right now, just a verbal SBS instead.
Basic idea was to paint her a bit in Boris Vallejo style, e.g. like the
Birdwoman, and was trying to use less and less colors, shading the back to dark purple, and the bottom to dark green.
So the skintone was done basically with
- 1:1 mix of VMC 70.845 Sunny Skintone and VMC 70.981 Orange Brown
- highlighted with 1:1 mix of VMC 70.815 Basic Skin Tone and VMC 70.845 Sunny Skintone
- up to 1:1 mix of VMC 70.928 Light Flesh VMC 70.815 Basic Skin Tone and to pure Light Flesh on the face and the breast
- darkened with 1:1 mix of VMC 70.981 Orange Brown and VMC 70.846 Mahogany Brown
- and even added to this some 1:1 mix of VMC 70.950 Black and Schmincke Primacryl Quinocridone Magenta
Gold was about the same mix as the one for Lazarus, 2-3:1 Schmincke Vanadium Deep Yellow:Schmincke Cadmium Orange, highlighted with Schmincke Primacryl Titanium White and shaded with Mahogany Brown and the Black:Magenta mix
Stones were made mainly with Schmincke Primacryl Phtalo Green Blue Shade, except the neck piece, it was Yellow Shade, and was mixed with White and Black stippled to resemble them to jade
Personally I think the most difficult to paint is the hair and feathers. There were not so much hair on this mini, but even more feather, so I had to find a good method to paint an acceptable version of them.
The basic colors were the Magenta and the Yellow Shade (as there were too many Blue Shade on the mini), I blended them through the length of the feathers. I based the feathers with 1:1:2 mix of Black:White:Base colors, getting a desaturated background, added 1-2 thin wash of Black:Base just to find the sculpted recesses, and painted the barbs with 1:1 mix of White:Base colors. Finally added some more wash toward the shaft of the feather, and highlighted the shaft itself.
The pillar was an wasy task, used some dishwasher sponge to stipple Light Flesh and Mahagony Brown mixes, darkening it toward the ground, and added a bit of blood by mixing Mahagony Brown and Magenta, receiving a wonderful dark dried blood color.
Finally came the airbrush, darkening the back with Black:Magenta mix, the ground with Black:BlueShade mix, and as the skin was too desaturated, filtered it with some VMA 71.083 Orange (especially on the arms and legs) and Magenta (mainly on the stomach and loin).
