House Rule - Flayed Men (revisiting the barded heavy cavalry)

This house rule is what we use when an army is lead by an House Bolton commander. I just thought i'd share it in case others would feel like using it. It's based on the barded heavy cavalry profile of the Baratheon Champions of the Stag, which is quite similar to what the Flayed Men...

Lord of Bones vs Targaryen (Dothraki / Khal Drogo)

I've played this match up yesterday, and unsurpringly the Dothraki just -wiped- the floor with the Free Folk. Have anyone played this match up before? How did it go? Targaryen ran the basic core set force Khal Drogo in Veterans Screamers with Screamer Ko Outriders with Outrider Ko Screamers...

Using the original Flayed Men in the context of a Bolton Army

This is house rule territory. That said, i wondered what would be your stance (for casual games of course) if someone would ask to play with the original card from the Flayed Men in the context of "true" Bolton army? That means only using Bolton units with the exception of Neutral NCUs (such as...

Lord of Bones vs Dothraki...quite the challenge

I just discovered that the Lord of Bones really hate fighting Dothraki...an all cavalry army has few ranks to destroy, and they are more resilient than infantry (6 wounds instead of 4). That means the opportunities to get out Rattleshirt's tactic cards are few and far between. ((oops wrong forum))

Upcoming changes to Jeor Mormont, Night Watch captains and conscripts

As we could guess, the changes are coming along for the Night's Watch. What do you think about them? Conscripts can now have vows and are insignificant. Captains cost 1 instead of 2 and they have an order to use a vow as if you controlled the required zone. The unit won't start with a...

Dothraki Vereran and Outrider KO with the same art?

The whole starter set is really well produced and looks amazing on the table, with the exception of this odd little thing: they both have the same artwork? I don't think there's a precedent for it yet, where an attachment is the same artwork as a different unit.

Pre-orders in Canada - some issues

It seems that my local store have problems pre-ordering stuff from Asmodee. They tell me that they can't know in advance what they will be sent until a week before. As such we can't really secure a pre-order on anything since the Baratheon starter set and faction banners. I leave them a list of...

    Sentinels

How do you use the sentinels in this army? I've seen them focused down rather quickly due to average morale. They seem to be especially vulnerable to cavalry as these units can get into their flanks. Do you put attachments in there? P.S. i mainly use Stannis and have no experience with Renly.

1.5 panic tests : the Boltons approve

I must raise my hat to the development team. They really did a good job with the revamp of panic tests. It was simply too easy to protect against panic, and the Boltons suffered from that. This is encourageing. They kind of killed 2 birds with the same shot. 1. Strong morale could avoid...

    Stannis's favorite bodyguards

I can't decide what unit suits him best: Stag Knights or Wardens? Stag Knights are faster (that inch matter!) and punch much harder, but they cost a ton...and with Stannis in there, will be having a huge target mark. They can access 3 abilities on their last rank. Wardens are super hardy with...

    Request: Baratheon tactics subforum

As in the title, i guess it's time for the one true king Stannis to have his own forum.

    Unit ranking for fun

NOTE: this was written within the context of rules versions 1.4 The game is balanced overall, we know this, but i wondered how people perceived the different units within their factions? Here's my ranking: In black are units of regular value, ranked in power relative to their faction In Green...

    Horrific Visage vs Vicious

If anyone has been reading my posts about Blackguards, you probably know my opinion on the Horrific Visage ability. I've ran alot of statistic checks between a unit having Vicious and another having Horrific Visage. I've concluded that Vicious is -always- going to produce better odds of panic...

King's Guard (unit) vs Night's Watch Stone Thrower

The King's guard has been a puzzle for me so far...and with the advent of the Stone Thrower, able to literally pulverize this unit, it's not getting easier. I get that we need to protect them usually, but in this case, we can't...and since they cannot heal, it's the dream target for the engine...

Appearance of the Bolton Flayer and Dreadfort Captain vs their rules

I was looking at the new Bolton Flayer's card and the old Dreadfort Captain's and kept pondering. The Dreadfort Captain's appearance makes him fit alot more with the Blackguard (plate armor and shield)...while the Flayer seems visually quite at home in the Cutthroats. Since the Blackguards...

    Builders crossbowmen

So i've received this unit yesterday. I really like this unit, the miniatures look nice and it is quite deadly too. It's basically elite Lannister Crossbowmen. I do like the weaponry consistency (Long Range, Sundering for crossbows). With Othell Yarwyck as commander, they can get 7 shots...

    Order: Ready! Aim! Fire!

Sometimes i wonder if i am just caring a little too much about these things...but anyway. One of the new cards for the NW is a warmachine modification called "Ready! Aim! Fire!" . That name is straight out of a napoleonic unit of muskets or other fire squad of that era. Using the verb "fire!"...

    Spearmen

It's been discussed before in shady corners of other forums and these, but typical medieval armies used a lot of spears for their general infantry. Now obviously the 7 kindoms have access to much better equipment than the usual historical army and it has high emphasis on knights, but still...as...

Conscripts - when and how to use them?

I'm certainly not the most experienced Night's Watch player, and i'd like to know how the dedicated ones have used this unit? I've found that the 8+ morale make it less of a tarpit than i expected it to be. At 4pts each, i don't expect that much either, but any tips on how to get the most of them?
