I guess this is kind of hypocritical coming from me, as I spend a big part of my time painting toy soldiers, and find military history, films etc interesting, but war is hell, remember the veterans who died, what they and all the other people envolved in conflicts everywhere have suffered, but lets not kid ourselves about any of the wars after the WWII being about defending our freedom, or that all those people have in some way died for us. Remeber the dead, and a pox on the businessmen and politicians who sent them to die.

Ack missed the \'after\'. Well that includes the Korean War, which my Grandfather fought in, and the Afghanistan war... hmm..
In the newspaper today they had letters written home by one of the Canadian soldiers. She was making a difference. It wasn\'t about oil or business, it was about the Afghani people.

and Corpuscle it is a damned good thing that I am not a mod on this site. That was by far the rudest most insensitive thing I have seen on this site in a long time. I have had to walk away from the monitor 3 times now to keep from putting my fist through it to see if I could reach you and telling you how I really felt. I have lost too many friends in too many hell-holes trying to preserves someone\'s freedom - granted they were not fighting for the freedom of the United States, but they were fighting for the freedoms of the South Koreans, the South Vietnamese, the Samalis, and too many other places around this globe to name. I\'m going to go hang out with some right-wing gun nuts now that understand that when a man dies serving his country, his sacrifice should be honored.

Yes that\'s right and you can laugh but they were very efficient fighting the tanks. First of all cavalery sabres were so hard (or maybe german construction was so weak) that could dish the tanks barrel. Maybe it\'s nothing but the next shoot caused the barrel explosion. Next- a good thrust of a lance/sabre could immobilize the tank. I don\'t know the details but there was a way to get to the engine. And finally the most succesful method - when the german tank crew stoped for a piss in the woods cavalerymen charged them, cut out what they could and run like hell.
Ofcourse there\'s the other side. One shoot of the tank missle could kill half of the unit...

Anyway in some cases cavalery outweights tanks like a cutler outweights a halabardier or a pikemen - a muskieter. The point is to make this situations happen.

Yeah..they charged tanks with cavalry...

They also contributed mightily in the Battle of Britain where experienced Polish airmen played an important role.

In fact the whole caboodle was kicked off by the invasion of Poland so the Poles fought the longest and possibly the hardest...as testified by sending cavalry to battle Panzers..:innocent:

I have to agree with Finn on this one, ALL those men, those SOLDIERS, died so that people COULD say stupid insensitive things.

I\'m sure, with the possible exception of EvilDave , that we all agree that war is HELL!!!

But this thread has ZERO to do with war. It\'s about the men and women who have given their lives so we can sit in front of our monitors and talk about stuff like this.

So give the anti-war sentiment a rest, willya?

Lord knows I\'m usually the first person to beat on the warmongers, but this is neither the time or the place.

EDIT: Sorry Rapaparat2, I was not dissing the Polish, merely making a joke. I am well aware that that particular cavalry charge was perhaps one of the single bravest moments of WWII, and no disrespect was meant on my part. I should not have made light of it.

Finn, I have no problem with them thinking war is wrong. But to come to a Rememberance Day / Veteran\'s Day thread and knock soldiers is like the group that protests at the funerals. The poorest of taste.

Lets not forget operations in holes like Bosnia and Kosovo and the British soldiers who fought and died to liberate the Falklands. Hell remember the Argentine soldiers who died there aswell. All sacrificed thier lives and should at least be remembered for one minute of one day.

My Greatgrandfather fought in the trenches and was shelled. He woke up in a morgue and had a really bad headache. He felt the back of his head and there was nothing. The entire rear of his skull had been blasted away. By some miracle he survived.

Lest we forget those who werent so lucky.

I knew an Elglishman (yes, I actually know some in RL) who said he AND his three brothers fought in WWII. All four of them fought in different theaters, all over the globe. Miracle of miracles, they ALL MADE IT HOME! He said it was written up in all the papers back then, because most families lost some, if not all, of their children. Last time I seen him was 7 years ago, maybe it\'s time to see if the old chap is still about...

War. What is it good for? I guess if you violently attack another nation to overthrow a tyrant that oppresses his/her citizens then it\'s possibly okay. So as a means as a last resort step to rescue people from nastiness perhaps it\'s justified. With Japan--this country was viewed as a great threat and somthing had to be done. It seems it was okay to kill over 100\'000 Japanese people because it brought an end to the war. The outcome justified the means. I wish we lived in a world where there was no war! Ahh, but there\'s no room for silly idealists in this harsh and cruel world. High-taxes, morgages and ennui is something most of the \'free\' have to look forwatd to. Modern conflict seems to me to be mostly usurpation of other nations by despots. But I\'m not going to bother getting into that right now. I just hope we can leave a better world behind for future generations.

In line with this thread... I\'d rather pay homage to all the innocent victims of war whether still living or not. All the children who grew up without father. Parents who lost their children to the war, innocent victims such as the Hiroshima people and Falluja people of recent times. To these people I would gladly pray (to my own special God) for and pay my respects. Would it really do any good? Let\'s move on humanity! Let\'s free the whole world from poverty, famine, etc, etc. Together we can do it.

If you were patient enough to read my thoughts on this matter you may have noticed that I\'m in a sentimental mood for today.
