i see what your sayin\' meg, and i agree with ya from reality\'s point of view...i\'ve often wondered about this myself, especially when i put a space marine on a pile of skulls, and then think about how much a marine must weigh, it just doesn\'t seem right that he would be standin\' on a perfect pile of skulls...
the only problem is that the bones get a bit lost, as i didn\'t even realize he was on the original base...it\'s no big deal, as the wolfen is the center of attention anyway...
i was gonna pm ya this question, but i think that everyone would benefit from the answer...when ya painted the marine, how did ya handle the arms??? they need to be painted seperately, to get the chest and the inside of the arms...i\'m not sure if i wanna pin the arms, as the have some deep slots inset into the shoulders...there doesn\'t seem to be much depth left to drill into, way too easy to accidentaly drill through the shoulder pads...i\'ve thought about attachin\' the arms to the end of some scrap sprue, but then i\'d have to scrape of the superglue after paintin\'....
i\'ve got him all cleaned, and ready to prime, but i can\'t decide how to tackle this tircky bastard...

great technique on them along with most others

i think the thing you need to improve most is colour usage

on some figs your colours are very plain or basic(wolf for ex) on others the saturation levels are a bit uncontrolled(marine) and on others they are quite good(lorelai dryad girl)

a bit more studying on colour should help with this

i think the best thing to help you judge yourself and your improvement, is if you can see a distinct improvement after every 2 figs...even if its only with a specific area/concept

for myself, my work in general as a whole isnt the best, but if you take the elements i focused on from each piece and put them together you will see the massive improvement, it just comes down to how you choose to improve, and how much you are willing to let yourself do to improve

Jah--I put the whole marine together first and then painted him. It was tricky at times but it worked.

The copy I\'m working on now I put him together but left the axe off. I\'m painting him in pieces just to see if I yield better results.

Starks--I guess I don\'t understand your recommendation that I improve on my color usage.

And here\'s why . . . I don\'t want every mini to look the same, nor do I want to get myself in a rut and use the same colors over and over again. Plus some pieces are dictated by what the customer wants.

Varghar was a commission piece and while I had freedom with him I did want to try and work on using whites and lighter colors. So that is what I did. Varghar also didn\'t photograph well at all. If you saw the piece in real life it has a lot more contrast and color. You can see the glazes of blue and purple all over him. He has a lot more depth than the pictures do show. But that was the best I could come up with.

With the space marine I wanted to use the rainbow. I wanted him to be bright. The red, orange and yellow are brightly colored and warm, hot even. While the teal and purple are rich and somewhat bright still but there is a lot of contrast between the cool and warm colors. I don\'t see anything wrong with that. I didn\'t want any part of him to be muted though. I wanted him THAT bright. That was intentional.

Considering I used every color in the rainbow and still made it work I think that shows an exemplary usage of color.

somehow i missed your response for a few days...
thanks for the answer on the marine...i\'m suprised that ya painted this guy as one piece...with the high collar back, it must have been a bitch to reach the back of his neck...i don\'t even wanna think about paintin\' the chest eagle with those arms in front of it...
mine is in 5 pieces right now(body, head, backpack, and 2 arms), and i\'m pretty sure that\'s how i\'m gonna tackle him...the backpack, body, and head were easy enough to pin, but i\'m still not sure what i\'m gonna mount the arms on to paint...

i can see where you\'re comin\' from with wantin\' to experiment with as many different colour combos, and stay fresh...
i\'ve been lookin\' at the minis that i\'m preppin\' and gettin\' lined up for when i finish the last of my commissions...it\'s gonna be a few months of just red and black as the main colours...it\'ll be a definite \"colour phase\", even though all the minis are from different settings and manufacturers, like picasso\'s blue period...
i will have my red and black periodlol...
