Will the shelves be glass strips or wood? Glass is easier for lighting, else you risk all of their heads being in shadow from the shelf above. Are you going to build in lighting? I think a flourescent tube down either side rather than the tempting single at the top. Where will the name of each chapter be? On the figure base edge or on the shelf? Your mock-up looks as though it might be a little wide, take care that the figures remain the focus rather than vanishing into a huge case. Will the figures be glued to the shelves to maintain even spacing for display? If not & the shelves are wood/plastic are you going to cut shallow holes for them to sit in? Magnets spring to mind too. Just some quick thoughts

I was thinking wooden shelves, and lighting strips on the bottoms.
I was going to dremel slots for the bases, and the names will be on the shelves with a chapter symbol shoulder pad.
The dimensions on the mock-up image aren\'t perfect, I am planning about an inch between each, and half inch from the sides.
My G/F does miniatures (dollhouses) so the lighting will be easy.

Jester; I\'d suggest not using wood for the shelves.

Okay, I\'m starting on the ones that I could base-coat with black primer, since my white prime clogged.
So my question is this:
Do I paint a nice clean color scheme?
Or do I make them worn and grungy to show their age and era?

Are you intending to make this a portable display?
If not you\'ll still need to make sure you can dust the minis now & again.
You could always \"double depth\" the perspex and countersink the position for the base. 28mm Forstner Bit should be right, drill through top section before placing together.
Oh and I too add my vote for Parade ground pristine.

I\'m not thinking portable, more like interchangeable.
I want to be able to switch out the figures, like the Pre-to-post-heresy versions.
Or even the Luna wolves/Sons of Horus.
It\'s looking like Parade Pristine is going to be the way to go.

While in theory an invisi-marine sounds great, it is prohibitively time-consuming, and sounds expensive.
I thought that their armor was \"ferro-crete\" or \"plascrete\", so a dark grey or black makes more sense.

There armour is made of ceramite http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Power_armour
Which is a hard ceramic material. Also think I have read somewhere that it is a mix ceramite and plascrete.
Pre-heresy death guard didn\'t paint there armour. Here are a link to a pic:

to help make the display you might want to go to micheals or hobby lobby and look at shadow boxes, something like that might save you some time and effort, good luck

I\'m going to build the box/display myself, because I want it to suit the display of figs, not having to suit the display to the box.
Plus There\'s a bunch of things I want to add.

First, I love the \'glass\' idea of the display. That sounds really cool.
I too vote of \'Pristine\' condition.
The Mystery ones....hmmm....I like the idea of the clear resin, but just plain Black Primer (and no detail) may work well also.
