5.2

Hi y\'all..
Yeah I know it kind of goes againt what I usually say about voting blues.. but wen\'t and posted my last mini, which I was kinda happy with, a bit better than the two last ones it think. Follow link in my sig to see, I\'m not \'pimping\' it.
Now It\'s at 5.2.. I usually don\'t complain about votes but it\'s considered as \'barely tabletop\' seemingly... That hurts.
Now don\'t get me wrong.. I don\'t think it\'s better than any 6 grader.. but 5.2??? Almost
a point less than my first knight and it\'s better, imo.
It means it has gotten 4s and such..
Anyway, I just wan\'t to talk about that and if anyone sees what\'s hurting it scorewise please let me now.. I really feel it deserves more than 5.2 and I never voted this roughly myself. I don\'t game and it\'s really the least important side of the hobby for me so tabletop is kind of like telling me to go do something else...

well....its happened to me before. dont sweat it. it IS better. sometimes the score you get is just the luck of the draw.

Yeah, I kind of guessed youd be here to support me.. but not that fast:D

Yeah, don\'t worry, it\'s just the cold shower effect:( I\'ll get back up and keep the brrushes in the pot.

It shows how much summoning friendly votes help the score, I\'ll use my friendly credits more wisely now and work on my pimping techniques as well..

Well, it seems the colors are a bit dark.
Especially on the horses barding, the pattern on the barding looks good, just the red and the green need to be a tad brighter.

Thinner paints over white perhaps?

please refer to the thick skin thread ;)

I think as a whole, your bretonnians should average at about 5.5, i do agree that this one is better than your first, but in my honest opinion it is mainly due to the first one being slightly high rather than the new one being exceptionally low.

As for pointers, I think that you need a bit more contrast to all your colours (brighter highlights), and a number of the lighter areas could do with some black-lining (such as between the skin of his face and his hair).

The tonal range for his face is very good - not too bright or orange, I also like the colour of his fur. Your metallics are also very nice, but could do with some more shading, and perhaps some blacklining.

Keep painting and dont fret about the scores! It\'s all about practice - heck, I\'ve been doing this for 16 years, and you are a damned-site better at doing it than i was just a few months into my painting \'career\'!

What you should really be happy about is your score in comparison to people that have been painting for many years.
Again keep in mind that everyone has his own standards according to which he votes. For me your Brettonians as I\'ve seen them are 5.5. I feel you can become very good, you seem to have good color choices but I think your minis still luck a certain crispness and smoothness which I value very much.

Keep up the good work, and for all that it matters, keep having a good time whilst painting. That\'s the best part of it for us amateurs :)

I think Avicenna hit it on the head. Its a good peice and just needs to be brought home. Add some more highlights and some darker shadows to it. I would also try and diferenciate (SP?) between the guys tabard and the horses tabard.

First off, I know nothing about Bretonnians. However, I consider myself somewhat expert on heraldry. The rules of heraldry were set down by people who knew what was distinguishable at a distance and what looked good, so they make a good starting point. You don’t have to follow them of course, but if you do, you can’t go wrong.
The first rule is that there are only 5 colors - Red, Blue, Green, Purple and Black.
The second rule is that there are 2 metals - Silver(white) and Gold(yellow).
The third, and most important rule is that a color should never touch a color and a metal should never touch a metal. (there are exceptions, but we’re being basic here)

So, while I like the musician, and the shields and the pattern on the caparison are very nice, they are red on green and no matter what will look dark or garish, and from a distance will just look green.

GK5 by contrast has yellow(metal) on green(color), which can be seen a mile away.
I would give the musician a 6.5 because he has good skin and well done details in the freehand work. He would look better if you kept your colors more limited (he’s got green, red, blue, brown and purple) I personally prefer GK5, which I would only rank a 6 because the diamonds on the bottom of the front shield run together. I just think he shows a better color theme.

What Vince said about Heraldry...

Brown is not an heraldric color Red/white or red/yellow on the musician\'s shield - I like the idea of quartering the shield, but you gotta nail the areas.

I like it :D voted unt commented. Besides, you don\'t have many votes now... when you have reached 50, that will probably be closer to the real average. Scores bungee up and down for the first 20 or so

Not in the English/French system anyway. I think it may be in the Spanish one, but I\'m trying to keep thing simple, and as Arthur was English and Lancellot was French, we can stick with those.

Yeah, thank you all.
I\'m all good now, was a little upset when I saw it this morning...

It\'s pretty much settled at 5.3 now, oh well...

The heraldry thing does make sense, and not respecting it is enough an argument for a few low votes...

I\'ll just keep at it and see if I can break out of this \'tabletop\' phase..

@Funny, yeah, It\' been a few turns of phrases that I messed up lol

Vince, prove to us that Arthur was English! That\'s a big porky-pig of an assumption lol

Every bloody county and country within the UK has a claim on him and he may have even been a Roman. There\'s every chance he was Cornish, Welsh, Scottish, Northumbrian or something else. Apologise damn you lol

Yesterday I have the same kind of experience GreenOne. One mate I haven\'t see in real for ages (we speak a lot on internet) came to finaly visit me. He is a former warhammer 40k player and painter, he painted 3 armies back in the 90\'s at a fairly good standard. So I show him my latest paints and he was like \"it\'s not to bad, but...\".
I felt a little let down, some where clearly table top (I want to play with them) but for characters and other stuff I was quite happy with them but he dismissed them as an average work. So much for me
Anyway, if you are happy with them then don\'t take it to much for you if you get around 5, after all you will improve and it can only get better right? That\'s what I\'m thinking. Now I just need to properly finish my minis and show them here, I guess they won\'t score that high neither. lol
Oh and about your knight, I did like them, but they seems to lack a bit of contrast and highlights and could use maybe a little bit more darklining to separate the colors (I use a thin pen for that, not confident enough to paint them).
I also found that in general, unless you have a good camera and light, pictures don\'t do justice to minis.

Okay, Rev. I apologize.
I\'ve heard the Roman stories, and I understand his most commonly accepted burrial place is in Wales.
I think Mallory had him as English, and that\'s the basis for most modern stories.

You have to admit that Arthur was king of England though, don\'t you? I\'m talking about the literary Arthur (basis for Bretonians) not the historical Arthur.

@Rev: Hijacking my thread are you now?
lol

@Dude: Thanks, and welcome^^

I would be happy with them considered as average, for the time I\'ve been painting..
But, as how always see it, on a 1/10 basis, average would be at 6 and everything decent starts from there, for instance, in school we pass on 60%.
I think there is a hump between 5 and 6 that just has to be passed before we can get to serious business... there are miles between 6 and 7 and lightyears between 7 and 8 and more...
Just though I was throught that hump, but seems not everyone agrees. It\'ll require some more work to convince everyne
Bah, I\'m already halfway done with my champ and SB, so I\'ll forget this minor setback soon enough.:)

I\'d go for the warlord equivalent version. I think the kingship idea came later. Noone knows where the hell he went and who he was though. The earlier stuff would be more reliable, and he ain\'t a king back then. He wouldn\'t have been king of England as I\'m sure the divisions as they are now would never have existed then. He\'s an enigma to say the least :wow:

*edit*

I suppose he was more the king of the isles than England, although I think you\'re right in saying it was pushed towards an English bent later, so you may have me there :D

I checked out the knight & I thought it was very well painted , I think it was an excellent rendition of a medieval knight & that is probably why it scored poorly .This site is predominately for fantasy minis, your guy looked too historically accurate , (like hed just got back from campaign ).What most people want to see from a fantasy Bretonian is bright & lurid colours with vibrant heraldry.I thought it deserved 7-8, dont be discouraged you are doing all the right things in my book , maybe next time just make your Bretonions more bold in colour. GOD bless ..............VINCENTI
