6 New GW Paint Colors - What do you think?

The new colors are:

1. Catachan Green - this is a nice medium Olive color.

2. Terracotta - this looks like a slightly lightened generation of Dark Flesh. Dark Flesh was TOO dark for actual Flesh for me but this will do nicely.

3. Tanned Flesh - This is yet another lighter generation of Terracotta with maybe a touch of Vermin or Vomit Brown? It\'s my favorite along the Dark Flesh Tree and will be a suitable undercoat for the females whose skin I like to paint a bit paler then the menfolk. Sexist? Maybe . . .

4) Graveyard Earth - new to GW it seems - can\'t tell it\'s soource really but it\'s a great light brown - not down the mahogany path but more like a deep earthy khaki.

5) Desert Yellow - even lighter than Graveyard Earth this is a suitable highlight color for it so long as there\'s a kiss of the Graveyard Earth in it; has a slight yellow-green tint in it.

6) Commando Khaki - the lightest of the new releases but by itself could highlight Desert Yellow. It\'s a shade or two away from going directly over Graveyard Earth but a brush full of that would make a nice transition shade. I would highlight it with either White or Bleached Bone mixed in.

All in all I am extremly impressed with these - love the bottles, love the shades - can\'t wait to get into these . . . !

Love em, hate the list they\'re supposed to be taking out. Vallejo still comes in better bottles so I\'ll stick with them for the most part.

Yeah, I\'ve already got most of the \"new\" colors as the Vallejo equivilent. Don\'t think the new paint pots do much of anything, either. I\'ve hated GW for selling crappy paints before and nothing will dissuade me from buying anything else but inks.

I\'ve not seen the new colours, but it sounds from what you say Flashman that GW have released some useful ones. I think I\'ll be sticking to Vallejo from now though (apart from GW\'s inks and the odd metallic!). Not enough paint and too much money when it comes to GW these days unfortunately.

Just a point on the new pots. My local store finally has few of these new fangled things in their paint racks. Just as an observation, I can\'t see them being a vast improvement on the screw tops! Yes the lids will be quicker and easier to remove, and yes it should cut down on the amount of paint (and ink which doesn\'t suit the crappy screw tops at all!) that is wasted by it drying in the lid or flooding onto the screw threads. BUT! There\'s still going to be the same old wastage that comes with the paint drying out in the pot! There is still the same surface area of paint exposed to the air when you have the pot open (and trapped air when you close it again!). So it\'s still going to coagulate around the top edge of the pot and in the bottom when you get down to that last half inch of paint. A thinner or more tapering pot is needed to help reduce that problem.

Oh well, what can you do?!

In quality they are no different to the exiting range.
In colour they are a great addition and can be used wisely to achieve good results. I\'ve used bothe the Kommando KHaki & the Graveyard Earth to act a base coats on the Trolls I did for GW recently and thgey worked out OK.
The Tanned flesh is in reality a mix of Dark Flesh & Dwarf Flesh and works nicely as a base coat for flesh tones as shown in my CMoNAmazon (Blatent Advert)

I\'ve not used the Yellow, Terracotta or Green yet but I think that for a beginner, or someone who has limited access to paints, they will may a good addition to the range.

As for the pots; I thought that they were going to be better, but having been advised by GW staff to try to keep them upright when carrying them cos the flip top isn\'t sealed, I\'m a little bit disapponted. (There\'s going to be a few kids with hacked off parents trying to get acrylic paints out of clothing!)

If that\'s true, then how do they ship them without the bottles leaking all over the place? I think that\'s a bit of an exaggeration on the staffers\' part, there\'s no way they would leak that bad and get to the store intact... plus how would you shake it without splashing paint all around the room? I can\'t even believe for a second anyone would let a product get through QA with such huge flaws.

How much!!!!

Recently, in another thread, I decided to work out how much paint would cost if you bought a gallon of the stuff. (and yes, I know I desperately need to get a life!)

This was in order to support a suggestion by Vincegamer, that spending 99c on a gallon of distilled water, instead of using the crap that comes out of our taps, was a very good idea.

Having done the maths I discovered that, to buy a gallon of, lets say Goblin Green,, would cost you 553 British pounds or $892!!!:duh:

And I thought petrol was dear:bouncy:

I\'ve got a lot of the GW paints, but have been getting fed up of them drying out so am now replacing any that die with vallejo instead. It also gives me an excuse to order confrontation figures.lol

I do agree that the new colours do look quite versatile, but with the huge range of Vallejo, its a bit too little, too late for me I\'m afraid. I\'m also moving off GW inks to Windsor and Newton, because of the silly pots that GW use now and the price hike. W & N purple ink mixed with a bit of chestnut, used as a wash over bone or gold makes it look really nice IMHO.

I don\'t know why they decided to get rid of sky blue ink though, I used that quite a lot!!

I like the colors, but the paint is still the same formulation. The pigment is grainy, and the coverage is horrible if they\'re thinned even the least bit.

And it\'s a shame they dropped some of the colors they did. Pallid Flesh, and some of the browns will be missed.

Fortunately for us, unless I\'m misinformed here, Vallejo will still be producing those nixed colors in the game line. So stock up on those, if you start to panic. In the eyedropper bottles, you can store them for years! (Try that with the GWs...)

As far as the colors go, I love them. I can\'t wait for a vallejo equivalent. Let\'s face it, the GL paints are just better. But the GW paints are still very good, so I will happily use these in the mean time.

The best part of the release was the decision to release those new bottles in empty form. Vallejo bottles are great and all, but unless you\'re mixing vallejo and vallejo into them, they\'re a pain to fill. These are excellent for mixes. We will need more time to see how well they preserve the paints and how durable the hinges on the lids are, but they feel nice and solid and the bottle looks pretty well sealed.

I have no idea what the exact equivlent is, all I know is I\'ve got several earthtones that are pretty close.

IIRC the only brown being discontinued was Leprous Brown... great for undercoating yellow but not much else.

I\'m mad. none of the stores i go to have the new colors! and whats with the price hike on them? $.75 for a freakin fliptop lid? $4 can is too much. also are there the other colors in new bottles? i was wondering, because it only says there\'s those 6 color in the aug. WD.:flame:

Those six are the initial release. The other colours will slowly move into the new bottles as old stock sells out.

I\'m not sure why GW ever went away from the old flip top bottles. I\'ve got some that are probably 15 yars old and are still good. I refill them when empty with the new GW paint. Now as for drying out it does happen but it is fixable. Liquitex makes a product called Matte Medium for acrylic paint. If you remove the pigment from any paint what you get is the media. This is the part that actually dries out when you paint . If you put some into a pot with a little water you can bring any paint back to life. I\'ve taken completely dried out paint crushed it into a powder put it back into the pot with the medium and a little water and had it back as good as new. And as long as you get the pigment powdered it won\'t be grainy. But even paint that\'s just rubbery can be brough back with it. About the only thing it won\'t fix is paint that\'s frozen or started to ferment.

I don\'t know about the fermenting part, but I have some old Citadel (with the flip top lids) that has been frozen several times, and after thawing it still works well.

I am glad they are bringing the flip tops back. I still have quite a few of the old ones.

I still have some of the original Citadel inks that were sold in....eyedropper bottles!!

Why couldn\'t they have kept that idea?

I expect the lids would have a tear off seal like both types of the old flip tops (and the type used by Coat d\'arms & Foundry!). Keeps them nice and secure. I\'m sure that on another thread about these pots, someone said the lids were a hard plastic rather than a soft plastic (like the old ones). That would account for the poor seal on the lid. If that is the case and they are prone to open if mishandled then it\'s a pretty poor state of affairs! As for the lid flying open when you shake the pot... PUT YOUR DAMN FINGER OVER THE LID!

Sorry if that last sentence sounded a bit harsh, but it reminded me of the guy who wondered how you\'d get paint out of the pot if it wasn\'t designed with a dropper!
