A 5 year olds quest

So my wife and I made the mistake of talking about a painting comp around my oldest. He has decided that he wants to enter some of his skaven models for it. So for fun and to give him some more motivation I'm going to let him have a blog to post his models and his thoughts about painting.

Hi my Dad said I had to choose a nickname for this so I choose Ratboy. I have to post under his name so he can monitor everything I do online and anything that people send me.:bomb: I am going to be painting 10 guys plus a boss model for the contest. I have 2 weeks to paint them. Here is me starting the guys.:clover:

Oh god. Just what I needed. A 5 year old that is a more prolific painter then I am. Great! Just great! Probably be a better painter too!

Welcome Ratboy (and Dad), Good luck with your competition, and remember to ask questions, cuz' that's what we're here for! :smile-big:

They told us originally that there was supposed to be a young blood and an adult category but they've mashed everyone together, everyone vote for Richard (Ratboy) and hopefully he'll crush the old people!!

Please vote for Skaven by Richard Aspden at the following Facebook link:

If this link doesn't work search for Games Workshop Highgate Village on Facebook there are about 4 poll listings.

Great job, Ratboy. I voted, and would have voted for them based on the photos. Anyway, particularly like the bronze on the Rat Ogre.

Thanks Chad. He's been really happy with all the responses to his models. He keeps checking the voting and is super excited to be 3rd in the voting. He's painting a doom-flayer and a warlock atm. Little guy got up early this morning with me and painted the metal on them.

Awesome, he is showing some drive, and some talent, if he keeps it up there could be Demons in his future. Where are you guys located?

We live in Vancouver BC Canada. His favorite thing to do other than playing outside happens to be painting with his mom or I. We really like it because it draws him away from wanting to watch the tv and its great for his attention span. We have found its been great for his handwriting and drawing skills as well as hes gotten better at holding the brush. And his 2 younger siblings are also trying to paint all the time as well lol

What I have been doing with him is letting him pick the models that he wants to paint and letting him just do those in the colors that he wants to do, so now he had quite the collection of odd colored rats. As long as he is happy doing it I'm happy to let him pick the colors and do his thing. So far all he really know how to do is basecoat, wash and drybrush but hes 5 and all I am trying to do is teach him about colors, holding the brush properly and having fun doing it. His mom taught him how to do fire and that has become his most favorite thing to paint so far. I'm trying to teach him how to water down paints and get an even coat of paint on his models.

The funny part is he would rather paint his models than play with them. I gave him his own shelf in one of our display cabinets and he spent some time sorting out all of his models in the order that he wants to paint them. Its become a great motivational tool for him as well, he like to get up early and do a step on his guys before he goes to daycare in the morning, and he tries to stay up late every night just so he can paint as well. Its interesting to me as well that all he wants to do is paint skaven models. When he comes to the FLGS all he looks at is skaven and hes gone and planned out what models he wants next after he has finished painting what he has right now.

I would rather paint than play, and I do not have time for both. No worries about him only knowing 3 skills. Those 3 skills can get an army on the table, and can make it look decent when applied correctly. Letting him do them his way, with his colors seem to be the best way to keep it enjoyable for the kids. I doubt you will be making a trip to Gamesday will you? I honestly think he is on his way to being a good painter, especially since he is motivated. Keep at it!

This has given me inspiration to get not only myself back into painting but do something different with my 6 yo son and 5 yo daughter (I know I'll have to find some female models for her - not stereotyping but she looks for those characters in everything from watching movies to playing video games).

Great stuff and thanks for sharing.
