Well that\'s handy. You don\'t have to tidy up the house, make hors d\'oeuvres, put the kettle on...

Oh, you _don\'t_ mean your mother in law. I was gonna say, that\'s some shot!

Field,

Have you ever heard therm TOO MUCH INFO?!

That being said, the amount of red neck is proportional to the age of pregnancy. So in the case of the Spears clan, 16 is about right.

Once again, I and the state of Louisiana apologize for the Spears clan. We are ashamed.

Kevin Federline, however, is someone else\'s dishonor.

And somehow my message disappeared mid post . . . anyway beo, it\'s not TMI. TMI would have been giving you more description. At least I said monthly visitor and not period or menstration!

If you plan on having a long term relationship anyway you\'ll need to get very comfortable discussing such issues. A man needs to know the deal with his woman and her \"well being\" :p

Yeah, the Speare\'s clan really didn\'t leave the trailer park.
And any relationship that last more than a couple months (between opposite sexes) the topic of the woman\'s menses will come up, and a sexually ACTIVE couple will discuss it within the first month, pill/shot or no pill/shot.
And quick tips buts~ never, NEVER, EVER, call it her \"rag\". It\'s a sanitary napkin, or a \"pad\". And it\'s not a \'plug\' it\'s a tampon.

LOL

Seriously though, the \"clinical\" studies give condoms a failure rate of 00.178%.
So if you use one AND pull out, and especially if she uses something too, the chances of pregnancy are about nil.
The problem is that wee tadgers buy Magnum sized pole covers and they slip off, OR they don\'t put them on correctly (Pinch the tip) and take it from me, there are worse things to happen than her getting preggers. I worked in the Sick Bay for one Weekend, and the Sh*t that my \"fellow\" Marines came in to get treated for- *URK* - Some of it just wasn\'t natural.
Plus, it\'s kind of fun to pull out and watch the resevoir fill up...lol...but then again, I\'m an odd git.

Jester, pulling out is no fun, for either party! Just be safe and enjoy the ride dangit!

So, in sum, I don\'t get how anyone can get pregnant when using protection and using it properly. It\'s 99.99999999% effective when used properly.

There are certainly a lot of people who deserve censure for not using birth control or being too careless about it. However, the reality is that no method of birth control provides that level of protection, particularly under real world conditions.

The pill has a .3% - .5% chance of pregnancy assuming _perfect use_. For the pill, perfect use would include taking it every single day _at the same time every day_. Modern low does pills can lose effectiveness if you\'re off by even four or five hours one day. They might not work if you have to take antibiotics, or you have diarrhea and fail to absorb the pill that day. Actual use failure rates for the pill are from 5-8%. And that\'s assuming you can use the pill. Smoke? Over 40? You\'ve got years of fertility to get through pill-free.

Implant methods are much more effective since there\'s much less room for user error, but it\'s not like everyone can use those, either. They can cause depression. They\'re contra-indicated for people with a variety of medical conditions.

Sterilization for either gender isn\'t even 100% guaranteed. If you can\'t use a hormonal method and you\'re not ready to get sterilized, the last of the most reliable methods is the IUD, which I happen to think is great, but isn\'t the right answer for a lot of people. (It increases risk of infections, so you need to be monogamous. It also has a risk of sterilization, so they prefer to only give it to women who\'ve already had one child. Plus its incredibly painful to have applied if you haven\'t already had a kid. Trust me on that one. ;->) It\'s also not 100%, I knew a guy who was a product of an IUD pregnancy.

And the above are the really reliable methods. A condom is only slightly more effective than withdrawal (my parents\' method, so you can tell how well _that_ works ;->). A diaphram + spermicide is LESS effective than withdrawal. Doubling up and using a condom + something else improves efficacy, though
the chart of birth control efficacy I\'m looking at right now doesn\'t have stats on that.

I\'m not trying to defend the trainwreck that is the Spears family, just pointing out that no birth control method is guaranteed, and lots of them probably have much higher failure rates than people think they do. I know some of those rates were a shock to me when I researched this a few years ago.

Wren thanks for the info.

I should have written to clarify (but I was at work and getting my writing interrupted) that when I said that birth control is 99.9999% effective was meaning doubling up on protection. Both parties need to make sure they are protected in some way and condoms are the only way to decrease the risk of infections.

Well and what gets me with the story is:

1) They met at church--don\'t even get me started on this.

2) They don\'t seem upset about it. They seem happy

\"It was a surprise to both of us! A really big shock\"

But no OMG we need to talk about our options. This is serious! Kids don\'t have sex so young or if you do be safe and dont\' do anything stupid (like we apparently did).

Oy vey!

lollol
Sounds just like an old freind who\'s had 4 kids by four different fathers. She first got knocked up at 15. Church seemed to be as good as a singles bar for her.

In my old hometown, the public school was actually Catholic school. Great pains were taken to make sure we all heard about the \"evils\" of birth control and how truly awful sex can be. The last year of high school had the parents circulate a petition NOT to put condoms in the bathroom in the school.
Why? Because they\'re all good christians.

we had 400 students and six teenaged prenancies. the junior high next door had a 14 and 12 year old knocked up too.

The seperate or protestant private school in town had 2000 students and 2 teenaged pregnancies.

You do the math on that bit of religious hippocrasy.

I figured it was worth posting in a bit of detail for the benefit of some of the guys who might not have put much thought into this. The threat of pregnancy can put a scare into some guys that don\'t figure they\'re at much of a risk for STDs and prompt them to don the glove of love. ;->

And that right there ladies and gentlemen is why I remain Agnostic. There are too many hippocrates out there who feel they repent by being guilt tripped for an hour once a week. If I want that I\'ll just call my mom :p
