a new mini. not the most interesting, but he was a platform for practicing some techniques (mainly different metallic effects and skin tones). let me know what you think. tips about \"semm\" would be nice too.

Use something like future floor wax (you can get it at longs or safeway) or similar to get that lumpy texture out of the paint. This should really help with blending also.

For SENMM listen to what it is: Sky-Earth Non-Metallic Metal. It reflects the sky and the earth. Try instead of using just grat a blue-gray and a brown-gray.

the paint isnt lumpy, its the cast. for stylistic reasons i tend i tend to avoid uber smooth blending, even though i am now capable of doing it - i think it is over used. in fact, i did an uber smooth blend on the tabbard of this guy, and didnt like it, so i roughed it up to make it look more like real fabric. the brass is not supposed to be smooth at all.

For SENMM listen to what it is: Sky-Earth Non-Metallic Metal. It reflects the sky and the earth. Try instead of using just grat a blue-gray and a brown-gray. this is *NOT* SENMM, it is SEMM, sky-earth metallic metals. take time to observe the reflective properties of different metals with different finishes - they dont always reflect color well. also keep in mind that it is a *reflection*, a brown ground reflection would make no sense, the earth is grey/black. the sky is not always blue (in fact, where i am from, its usually grey).

i appreciate the feedback, but i find convention to .... well ... suck. think outside the box. i would like comments about more technical issues though - like the paint lumpyness thing, or for example, the horizons.

Looks really good Funnymouth. Infact, the bronze armor and helmet are truly realistic looking, without the exaggeration that NMM usually puts on. Very nice metaliic work.

Did that come out creepy again?

Edit: @Vike, I did not know you could pack that much text in a sig:eek:

And actually...I think it would look less plain if you used something else for the claws, other than bronze.

Yeah, its a bit wordy, and I probably won\'t leave it there for long. It was just such a cool passage of a HP Lovecraft story I was reading, I wanted to share.

You know the more I look at this the more I like it. I voted it an 8...BUT...

A bit of freehand on the cloth, even a line across the width would help break it up a little.

More attention to the sandals...They just look brown, a bit more \'weathered leather\' would help.

and finally, if you would paint the claws a different color (and that isn\'t necessary) would break up the monotony. The back of the gauntlet looks killer, so don\'t touch that.

But, anyhow with those changes, I\'d would definately give you a 9. (not that others would, and I tend to vote a little on the generous side...)

if you added verdigrace to the rivets and edges of the helms crest it would stop it looking flat.

for making cloth look worn add cross hatching and holes.

realy nice work by the way, your improving in leaps and bounds.:)

I like the overall look although I agree the Bronze could do with a little bit of breaking up ..The claw would be a good start and maybe the rivets on the shoulders just something to balance it out a little more...

As fo SEMM I have been playing around with it a bit lately..Using citadel colours and lots of water with a little metallic medium and replicating some of the shadows used with the NMM technique..Iguess with bronze it would be as dark a brown as poss.. The addition of the odd Bright spot with Silver or something seems to help..
I found that the less gradation of colours I used the better the effect..
Here\'s a couple of pics to show what I mean let me know what you think..

btw agree with you on the total smoothness.. I have just \"roughed up\" a couple of models tonight They are wargaming models after all not catwalk models.

that looks really great herald. i like the striations in the metal - at first i thought it was polished pewter! i didnt intend for the bronze to be semm - i wanted it to look flat, like it was pounded in a kiln and not polished. i guess its a bit too flat. i had added sharper hilights...but i removed them :(. perhaps ill touch it up a bit.

this is what i was going for:

See where your going with that now ..Nice one for trying something different..The overall look is really sweet ..I still think it needs the break up to give the overall effect and some careful little highlights..If you look at the 2 pics you\'ve given even that metal picks up to an almost soft silver but really cool job and thanks for the compliment...
will vote and comment..9 for me..
