A new old topic - new GW paints. New evidence...

I said before that I really am not altogether fussed what GW do as they aren\'t quite extortionately priced or anything just yet and on the paints side of things a lot of people are looking at other paints anyway. Things happen, you know?

But then I read in White Dwarf this month a little article (only a few lines) on the paint changeover dated 31st March. We\'ve been here a million times I know, but this really made me think a little bit differently...

They said (not ad verbatim) that with the change of price coming in March (no mention of new bottles?), now would be a \"great time to go and stock up on the paints\" whilst they are \"...still at their lower price!\"

Pheeeeew! They are telling what amounts to, in the main, a young group of people to go and benefit from their price increase by purchasing all the shitty screw-top bottles at the current price! Cynical. My thinking is that the swines at GW are making sure they get rid of all the stock BEFORE the new arrivals. Now I know this is business and I don\'t knock what they are doing on that score - business is business is business - but surely the price increase was the way to cope with the difficulty of replacing an established line?

Maybe I\'m getting things slightly out of perspective here, but I really felt that a sneaky article telling everyone to take advantage and STOCK UP was a little arrogant or at least below the belt.

Well, on with the show eh? I\'ve said my bit and I don\'t want to sound like a typical GW knocker because they\'ll always have a place in my heart (and my considerably lighter pockets).

I hear what you\'re saying but as some one said when I went into Games Workshop the other day is; a price increase of 25p over four years isn\'t bad.

I was also told that they will be stopping the production of some of the paints and changing the range slightly. So there is a good reason to stock up on some of your paints.

I have also been told the price increase is to pay for a new paint pot with both a screw lid and a flip top, I don\'t know whether this is the real reason or not.

Lastly a lot of the staff members I\'ve spoken to are stocking up on the paints themselves with a view to storing them so that when the new paint pots come out they re-fill the new pots when they are empty.

The same notice was on the paint rack in my local GW the other day. Stock up while you can! I\'ll be stocking up on reds for an upcoming commission (got to match previously painted models) and more ghostly grey as I don\'t know of a suitable alternative anywhere else yet! May stock up on inks as well, as they are good and they last about a year anyway! They\'re just playing on our insecurities really.

The price of GW paint will have increased by £1.15 a pot over the last 15 years I believe when the price goes up! Almost 300%. Is that in line with inflation?

I guess the price wouldn\'t be so irritating if only GW still used the old 20ml volume of paint per pot! Over the years they\'ve reduced the amount and increased the price! That\'s what really pisses me off. :flame:

It\'s how things go. Sometimes you are at the mercy of the business.
Try buying canned goods. Recipes routinely call for 16 oz cans, but I haven\'t seen more than a 15 1/2 oz can in years.

Paint prices and other GW meanderings

Well, look at it this way- GW doesn\'t want to be stuck with thousands of old paint pots when they change over- it wouldn\'t be logical for them send EVERY paint back to england and have EVERY paint opened, dumped into a vat of blood red, and redistributed- especially to Canada/USA. Of course they want to get rid of them and encourage people to buy them. I have no hard feelings against GW. Seems EVERYONE hates them for some reason, but look at it this way. Tehy produce more miniatures alone then the majority of the miniature companies PUT TOGETHER. They need to pay a hell of alot more people than most other companies do- painters, game designers, store staff, and the people who overlook there stores. The reason for athe recent increase on prices in the plastics is the people who work for the company that produces them wanted more money. I want more money from my job too, so the price increase goes down the line. Sorry all for the vent, but just seems everyone likes ripping on the mighty GW, without relizing that they have a huge overhead. And even though they do have higher prices than most, they also support there products 100%. Get a miscast? Take it to the store- u should have 0 problems. My hellhound didnt come with the track sprue- it was fixed in 30 seconds... Just my 2 cents- talk at you all later.

Unions eh!? Who\'d have em?!

They\'ve more more overheads, but they make more money due to their massive sales worldwide! It\'s all relative.

No problem with them trying to flog all their old stock before the new stuff comes in, but wouldn\'t it be nice if they discounted it to shift it quicker!? That\'d ensure their shelves were empty by March.

Discounts

If the new bottles are as much an improvement as everyone seems to think, then when stores have some of both, the new will outsell the old. At that point you can pretty much guarantee discounts on whatever they have left of the old stuff.
It\'s not as if once the new stuff comes out the old stuff will be raised to the same price as the new.

Oh Sturm, welcome to the 200+ club :flip:

200+ felt like a bit of a milestone. All these pointless little comments and quips really boost ones membership rating! Oh, I\'m doing it again. Sorry.

I might enquire next week in my local GW to see what exactly will happen with their old stock of paint when the new stuff goes on sale. I\'d like to think it\'ll be sold off cheap, but you never know....
