A question for you \'Eavy Metal types

Cake or Death?
Just curious, how long does it take for an \'Eavy Metal figure to get painted? I\'m curious both about rank and file minis, as well as characters.

The last time i talked with one of the EM team (a while ago now) they had to paint up 2 rank and file a day ....characters were very much dependant on size, complexity etc

I asked myself If they get restrictions not to make the painting to complex and detail ridden, because especially in some of the newer publications the painting I see seems to be waaay behind what I know they can pull of from their accounts here on CMON (nearly no freehands for example). Is this to attract more kids who whould be discouraged by the full force of an `Eavy Metal Painter?
A good example for this is the phoenixguard in the high-elf book. The gems seem to be just painted red and than gloss varnished! Ok. they are rank and file but if its true that they have to do 2 a day a higher standart should be easily reached. So someone or something must keep them artificially down??

what they paint in their own time usualy has far, far more time put into it than what they paint in the studio.

remember, in the studio they not only have time constraints but they also have a style to stick to.
in recent times they have had the reins released a bit for characters (which has been very nice to see) but in general they still have to stick to a general style and deadline.

Have you actually looked in some of the new publications. They are getting better and better. The Marine stuff is wikkid and the Chaos Warriors stuff is something else. Stunning painting and lots of freehand.

You have to take into account that the new stuff we see now would have been painted a fair while a go.
Also a lot of people into the hobby are not great painters so if paint schemes start getting to complicated it could be a bit off putting.

As others have said, they have a time limit on the figures they paint for EM. Imagine painting 2 rank and file troops per day thats a 10 days per unit. Each painter will be doing the force so could you imagine if the styles were mixed. The army would look non-coherent and a mish mash of styles.

Also as mentioned elsewhere they are getting more freedom for the newer figures. Skulltaker (nmm on the cloak)

It would be nice to see each person paint to their ability but i guess thats what this is for :p

I keep hearing this \'Eavy Metal \' term. What is it?
lollollollollollollollollol

Seriously....what is it?

The Eavy Metal team are Games Workshop painting team. The paint all the stuff GW releases and then they are used for the box art, promo shots, battle\'s in the magazines etc...

And quite a few of the team are members here on CMoN.

Peace and love...

I think they\'ve started in WD to do a better job of showing what this team can do left to their own devices when they all paint up the same figure without any guidelines. I speak for instance of the Harry the Hammer challenge and I think there\'s a Dark Elf thingy in the latest.

As a gamer first/painter second I think what happens is most people reference the pic\'s on the product and the books and take those images as the \"correct\" way to paint, and I can certainly understand if it would seem daunting to the new (or even experienced) painter to see the complete \"balls out\" versionof a \'eavy metal regiment of 20 models.

And if the \'eavy metal team only paints 2 models a day, then IN YO FACE \'Eavy metal, \'cause I can paint WAY more than that in a day. Take that sucka\'s!

Quality would totally be the same as theirs too!

Shawn: I\'m guessing you didn\'t apply for EM then?:D

Hey guys and girls,

Things have changed a lot recently, we do get much more freedom than we did a couple of years ago, and it will show as more and more books come out, as someone else mentioned we work very far ahead, normally about 9 months but somtimes up to 18 months depending on what it is.

Timescales for miniatures can vary but normally it\'s something like this :

Rank file troops - 2 a day
Colour varient single miniatures - A day a piece,
Characters - 3 days
Large characters (terminator sized) 4 days

I think i speak for the rest of the team in that we wish we could our best display standards on every single miniature we paint, unfortuantely games workshop is a business and therefor we have deadlines and have to stick to them, we will always produce the best quality work we can in the time that is given to us, not to take anything away from the stuff thats done in work because i\'m still amazed every week by the stuff the rest of the team is doing in these deadlines.

I hope this answers some peoples questions :)

Hey Guys,

its also worth noting that we dont always paint the entire range when it comes round to doing a project. so for example with the high elves, all the new releases were painted as well as some old figs getting a new paint job. however some of the figures (mainly rank and file) will be the paint job from the last time round....about 4 years old. Eavy metal has indeed (as joe has said) changed an awful lot in the last couple of years and you will see more and more freehand/NMM/OSL etc etc. however we do work quite far infront and have to take into acount that these figures also have to be able to be photographed on a table from any angle and still look great alongside every other army from the same system. so lots of things to look forward to, but they will all be introduced slowly. Eavy Metal is on great form at the moment.

if your interested we do indeed have a facebook group.......just search for Eavymetal. there you can ask the team stuff. or ask individual painters stuff or take part in our painting competitions as well as just supporting each other in the wonderful world of figure painting :)

Cheers

Fil, Brokenblade, thank you! After a couple of years I\'m trying to paint pro again, and I\'m trying to get a feel for what my time and quality is worth. Knowing your deadlines helps with that.

I\'m looking forward to seeing some of these changes.
