Thanks everyone! Hopefully the rest of the mini lives up to the cape. I think I'm going to use this guy for the figurementors contest, so I have a very special base in mind. Going to take my time and get everything just right. In the meantime I started practicing some TMM techniques for the English man at arms bust.

First, I left this side just base coated to see the difference

And then here's the finished product

Well her head is shaped perfectly for the base of a bust.

Not much painting done the past week, but here's what's happened today, some work on the young guard officer and starting on the man-at-arms.

I tried putting all 6 images in the same post, but I kept getting a message that my post was spam. Is this is a new thing on the forum? Can't put too many images in one post?

That grenadiers officer is a great kit, it's one I'd like to paint someday too!

I'm glad you were inspired by the historical stuff at the WME. One comment on the grenadier, his coat is becoming a pretty light looking blue. If you want to be historically accurate (which you don't have to, it's your figure after all), the coat should be a much darker blue. I had the same issue with the Polish Lancer I paint a few years ago. I got the same comment about the blue from someone over on one of the historical forums. At that point my reaction was okay, but I'm too far along and don't feel like redoing it. So I let it go and decided to address it on a later project. So, perfectly valid response is to just go with what you've got!

But, if you want to fix it, I'd suggest taking your dark blue and mix in a medium grey to highlight rather than a lighter shade of blue. That's the approach I took on my Navy Guard Officer and it worked quite well. If you want higher contrast you can add a bit of medium grey and then (at maybe 50/50 dark blue and med grey) start to add in light grey instead. I've done something similar for the dark green coat on my recent Dragoon. It lets you retain that dark green or blue color while still getting some nice highlights to define the shapes on the figure.

Again, it's up to you whether any of this matters or not. So far all the figure comps I've been to have judged just the painting, not how well the colors match the historical uniforms. If you like the figure better with a lighter blue coat, then paint him with a lighter blue coat! There are definitely times where I'll deviate from historical accuracy because I think it produces a better looking end result.

It might not be historically accurate, but I'm loving the blue coat. Superb painting all round, as per usual

Thanks everyone.

Bailey: I wanted to be historically accurate, but I had one small problem, I don't have a navy blue paint. I tried many different combinations of paint mixes to make one, but they all came out dark grey/blue instead. I'll use your advice to try and fix it.

Spent today working on the face of the bust. There are still some trouble areas I need to work on, like the skin around his left eye. Here's where he's at now:

Great thing you painted the face so well, that way it draws all the attention away from THOSE FREAKY ARMS! Can you make the stumps bloody? :D

Naaah, I jest, great work so far buddy.
