Advice on cleaning up...

Hi all,

This is the first time I\'ve posted, so be gentle :) I\'ve just bought myself a ForgeWorld BloodThirster - absolutly lovely model (though the body has had to be replaced). I class myself as an above average painter & modeller, though only average scuplter (aka fill the gaps and follow the detail). So felt that this would tax my skills just enough to be enjoyable.

I\'m finding that in places I\'ve got some quite nasty \'steps\' - could be mold slipage, but thats irrelevant tbh.

This pic should explain:

I\'ve (unsucessfully) had a go at another similar blemish, but without sucess. I originally tried green stuff, but that just didn\'t want to stick. Next up I tried a GS / miliput mix, this stuck, but once I\'d blended it in, I\'d lost all the definition on the hand :(

The only thing that I can think of now, is to gouge a V where the lip is, and to fill it with GS and actually resculpt it - however, if somebody has a better suggestion, then I\'m happy to not hack bits out of an expensive model :D

thx

Hi there newbie....;)

Actually I have this model too, and have very similar problems with it, so I will be watching this thread for our solution.

Personally, I was thinking of dremeling the area down a bit, and then rebuilding with greenstuff, but like you I cringe at the thought of gouging into the high priced resin.

I\'m puzzled why your greenstuff wouldn\'t stick....have you washed the mini down? It could be some mold release agent is still on there.

If you\'re thinking of resculpting the area I\'d say you can do it without hacking anything out. Just put some putty over the mis-aligned area and then resculpt the texture and blend the edges into the surrounding resin surface. It shouldn\'t be any harder than resculpting the surface after hacking out the problem area. I\'d suggest sticking with the GD/milliput mix since that would allow you to file and drysculpt the putty after it\'s set to create a better finish. If you should fail miserably at this point you can always use the hacking out idea as plan B.

I\'m aprehensive about filing for two reasons, firstly the \'lip\' is a good 1/2mm deep (so I\'d end up with a flat patch) and secondly I think that I\'d loose a lot of the skin detail - which I don\'t really want to do, as I\'m planning on using washes and glazes when I eventually get round to painting it.

I think that I washed the part down - however I might not have :p

One thing that it has confirmed however is that I still prefer plastic models to any others :D

Of course you would need to resculpt the surface texture if you fill out the \"lip\". A smooth, flat patch would probably look more off than if you kept the \"lip\". But, it doesn\'t look that difficult to rebuild the texture. Just score the putty slightly unevenly with a blunt blade or a thin sculpting tool along the existing wrinkles.

Well I\'ve had a go and its come out OK. I double cleaned the area that I was going to use GS on (foam cleaner and then a bit of lick), and using a needle in a handle type of tool, \'rolled\' the GS back along towards the wrist. Thankfully the skin ridges were pronounced enough that it followed them like a guide.

Now I just have to do the rest of them :( including the one that I did in GS/miliput

That looks good! That was exactly what I meant. :) Yeah, it takes time, but if you can save an expensive mini and make it look good it\'s worth it.

Um...yeah...

Unfortuanately I keep thinking I need to be \'good enough\' before tackling my forgeworld goodies....

I haven\'t quite reached \'good enough\' yet...LOL

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) Can\'t wait to start painting this awesome model to be honest, though I need to get a 1000 point wood elf army assembled and painted for the new year as well.

I\'ve started blog\'ing the progress of the model, but I\'ll stick up a WIP once its in a semi-assembled state, and I start painting. Still lots of work to do though.
