Alien Contact: Controversial Subject matter.

Well.... I think it's a great diorama. It is full of tension and possibilities for the outcome. It forces you to assess the situation and read it for yourself - I love the muddy knife detail. Despite it being a tough subject matter, I find it no more offensive or challenging than disembowling, decapitation, torture etc.. etc.. It's certainly exacted a response.

With regards to the outcry.... for those who don't like it, why not censor yourselves guys? I would be saddened if work like this was to be censored and banned, or put into a separate little 'dirty secrets' category.

You are so very right on with your words. I will say that at this point in the argument, I'm not really sure what usefulness comparing violence and rape has anymore. I think instead of everyone focusing on "which is worse," we should be focusing on rape by itself and what it means, both as an awful, awful thing, and as the subject for a provoking art piece.

Also I should point out that asking someone to censor themselves is not going to make anything happen. If someone feels like they need to do censor art (or anything) themselves, it feels like work to them, and they would rather it just be censored already by someone else.

The impression I get is that people are offended by this work not just because of the content within itself, but that it brings light to the fact that this kind of content exists within the 40k universe. Perhaps because they use the 40k universe as a means of escapism (it is all fantasy after all), part of that escapism involves getting away from such cruel realities as rape, and now that aspect is gone to them.

To me, this diorama only enriches the 40k world, bringing in a new gritty element to an already gritty lore. To me it just makes the 40k universe more alive, deeper. Now we know that the 40k world is not just all unicorn farts and rainbow sprinkles (hah like it was like that anyway... 40k is already chock full of violence and adult themes). Do I like that rape exists in the 40k world? No, but I think it's more dangerous to pretend that it doesn't exist, even in this fantasy world.

I also thank the artist for depicting this scene so very tastefully, not just (absurdly) well-painted/converted, but with layers of thought and depth to it.

Cool and uncool is whatever you personally define it to be. If you like it, "cool", if you don't "uncool". I don't think it would really be proper for one person to set a standard in that regard to which we all must adhere to appease them =P

my understanding is that the semantics of it perhaps became some sort of inside joke within the forum from a bit back? I'm not one to bother trying to be "in on the joke," but I also dont want to to "say one thing" when I "mean another" every time i use the word cool. I'm not ironic enough to do that haha

"Hi honey I'm ho...........WTF"

Talk about walking into a shit storm.

A lot of people are saying a lot of things they may regret in the future.

I can see the point of both sides............this is a fantastic site, and shouldn't be diluted in any form, otherwise we'll start on a slippery slope, but I also think telling people to bugger off if they don't like what being said is also just as slippery.

Can we add a new category for any nudie pic's. I admit sometimes in work, I've come across a tittie picture and had to quickly close the page.

On to the topic:

It brings home the harsh reality of we all know happens in real war. I'm not offended, just suprised that this subject was actually approached, and I must say it is done tastefully and I think stops just before it crosses the line.

If you notice the guy sat in the back is looking away, obviously finding what is going to happen distasteful. I think he's going to jump off the back of the vehicle and stop the act from happening.

Look very carefully at the close-up pictures of this guy's facial expression.

He is clearly in mid-thought, what do you guys think his expression says about his opinion on what is happening.

Was the fact that the close up of this guy is the last image in the series on purpose or by chance?

The inclusion of this character in the diorama says bucketloads about the artist's intent, and I am under the belief that this character represents the artist.

I know this has happened to me as well...but then I remember that I shouldn't be looking at this stuff while at work....LOL

I'd actually like to hear what the artists take on it is. I'm not entirely sure that's been put forward.
ahem, first page:
Hey, men. I told you already that i`m not a psycho, or a perverted maniac. It looks like it`s okay for toy guardsman to rip toy guts of this toy eldar girl with his toy knife, if he meets her on the gameboard or on the book pages, but it`s not okay for him to do what he`s going to do on my diorama? Double standarts indeed. I`m playing this game, i`m reading the codex fluff, i`m watching pictures on this site. And loads of top-rated pictures depicts naked girls and slanesh daemonettes, Blanche`s arts a sickingly cruel and even sexual sometimes, and even codex fluff full of brutality, kills, torture and perverted sex! Yeah, 6edition DElves armybook gives us some clues that Malekith has sexual relations with Morathi (his MOTHER!!!). How could i imagine that somebody will be so upset by my scene? I certanly do NOT feel myself doing something wrong. Wargaming miniatures are NOT FOR KIDS. It`s clearly marked on the box.

And i do not wanted to shock anyone. No offence in my words, no offence in my works. Treat them like a stories that YOU have a chance to finish. Sorry for my english, and don`t think bad about me and my toy stories. Regards.

Not really he's not saying what is fully the parts each guardsman plays. We can clearly see that 4 of the guardsmen are all taking part in whats about to be played out.

Then you have the fifth guardsman, he's clearly not taking part.

Is he ignoring the whole scenario?
Is he disgusted in what is being played out?
Is not yet decided what action to take.........are his morals in conflict.

This is what i like, this scenario is like he says no where near finished.

i dont think the artist should be explaining what the fifth guardsman is thinking/about to do. It is up to the viewer.

I agree, but it would be interesting to know why the decision was made to make this one guy clearly not part of the main focus. So even though the topic is not a nice one the execution of the minor details make for an interesting story, and how if he'd painted the guardsmans eyes slightly different would change the whole direction of the scene.

I have some advice for the people who are SO upset by this diorama... GET OVER IT!
That's no fun...
Seriously, you are an adult protesting something like this on an artistic website?
I know, Right?!
You thought the mini was uncool, so get over it and move on. It's not like you just saw a Chechnyan beheading video or something of the sort. I'm starting to think people just want to complain for the sake of it, just to add a little element of excitement into their otherwise dreary lives, by protesting something so trivial.
So many of us have said the same thing...
As I remember, Tom's IP7 Nightmare entry called "Daddy's Home" had some disturbing themes ( A LOT more so than this diorama), but again, it was a great piece that made you think about some nasty things. Good stuff!
OOH! Where can I find that? Sounds interesting. I hate it when someone references something publicly but doesn't post a link. Private jokes are rude.. :p
