Alternatives to iTunes?

I hate Apple. I really hate them. Hate, hate, hate. Therefore, I really, really, really don\'t want to give them any money whatsoever. Anyone got any good alternatives to iTunes when it comes to buying legal mp3s?

Amazon - singles from 69p and they advertised selected albums from £3 the other day.
Also I think HMV sell as well.

Nice! I shall check out both. :)

(Problem with this screen name - your first sentence completely confused me because I thought you were saying something directly to me, not referring to a well-known online retailer!)

I believe Amazon also sells music without the DRM (digital rights management) that can be such a pain. Apple charges an additional fee to strip DRM.

There\'s also these places that sell music already downloaded onto CD\'s with a collection of songs burned right onto them.

I think they\'re called .... Moooozik Stores.... or something like that.

Anyone else actually go to the store and buy CD\'s? The only reason I ask is that while I use iTunes, mostly for songs I already know and love, you just don\'t get the exposure to stuff you might get at a well run music store. I for example would never have heard of or been able to buy the album \"Total Brutal\" by Austrian Death Machine -A heavy metal concept band where the singer impersonates Arnold Schwarzenneger- if I purely went digital for my music.

I still love walking into a store and flipping through music, and with the advent of the internet CD\'s ar dirt cheap!

Yup. I don\'t expect people to agree with me - that\'s just my personal feelings up there. I just can\'t stand the smugness and if there\'s one thing I (me personally, doesn\'t apply to anyone else) loathe, it\'s following the herd. Seems like everythings got to be \"iThis\" and \"iThat\" nowadays and it really gets up my nose. Plus, I love my laptop and my non-iPod mp3 players, but I don\'t feel that I have to evangelise about them to everyone I meet, unlike pretty much EVERY SINGLE mac/apple user/fan I\'ve ever met. Seems like they don\'t need ANY encouragement from me.

@mickc22: Ah! I\'ve dipped into last.fm before, but not long enough to realise they sold mp3s as well. That\'s another one to pop on the list.

Yep, I do still buy CDs when the mood strikes me. Not that often tho, even before the advent of mp3s. Mueller often has good 4-for-3 offers on DVDs and CDs, so I raid there sometimes. What I mostly want an online music store for is random songs. Y\'know, stuff where I really don\'t want to buy the whole album. Or for sampling a band before I commit to splurging on one of their albums.

For streaming music spotify is excellent and affordable. I got a free invite so I get commercials instead, but I have to say they are very rare. :) I\'ll probably subscribe soon as I want to support it. I\'ll get some free invites then! :) I don\'t know how it compares to last.fm though.

+ Playlists that you can share. Having all my music on every computer. Excellent, wide, selection, easy to find new music. No bugs so far, everything works smoothly.

- Some gaps in the selection, often some albums of an artist is missing. Some large bands like Metallica are missing (what a surprise) - only some stray tracks from them.

I use eMusic, it has its ups and downs to be sure:

ups = very economical ($11 US for 30 tracks/month), DRM-free mp3\'s, lots of neat stuff from all genres
downs = many popular artists not available, some albums incomplete (?!)

It\'s a funny scheme, because you can end up getting some weird electronic album for about $1.30 (3 long tracks) but some 40-minute punk album can eat up 20 tracks! But that\'s how it works, I guess.

Well itunes is drm free now, but does that mean that all of the old downloads some of us have will have the drm taken off them??

I have used play.com for downloading (got a voucher for it at xmas), they seem to have a pretty good selection of drm free music. What i like aswell is you can but stuff, then download it later, so you can pay at work, then go home and download it there.

We have four ipods in my house... Itunes is the easiest way to keep them all stocked with music. Its all about the player. Itunes is more expensive than most. Even Walmart\'s are .89 US... But i really like the Ipod itself.

Ditto. I especially hate it when they\'re not Apple products so they\'re just trying to sponge off the cachet.

Well in all fairness the Mac fans are rightly pleased by their chosen hardware and it\'s only natural to want to share with the majority, who don\'t know what they\'re missing in most cases. Not much different from Firefox fans wishing to share the love with IE users and few people would begrudge them that :)

iPods, well, they\'re nice and all but they have some distinct issues.
