Alys Paint Along- my attempt

If you didn't know, Scott Hockley has done a Paint Masters over at WAMP. It's where we follow his step by step for painting a mini as a learning project. For this one he did Alys and Pussycat from Hasslefree miniatures.

I'm following his guide for creating the base as well, which is a mushroom. Here's what I came up with:

And here's a shot with Alys for scale:

I don't have very many P3 paints which means I can't follow his exact recipes, but I found some of my Vallejo colors are very close matches. Here's a WIP shot of the mushroom:

I also decided that I wanted to diverge a little and use real scale grass on the dio, to make it look like the mushroom is real size and Alys is just that tiny, to fit in with the Wonderland theme. My first idea was to preserve some grass from my backyard and just use that.

Well, preserving grass is just about impossible. The first batch was limp and impossible to use, the second curled up into hard little sticks. I went on a search and finally found some pretty realistic looking grass at a craft store in town, so I cut and pinned it to the base and painted over their strange color scheme to make it look more real. I also finished up the spots, everything else on the mushroom, and added a rock to break up the sandy-paste I added to the base.

I'll be moving onto Alys next.

Following the next step of the paint along, I worked on and finished the Chesire cat. I found that Adeptus Battlegrey and Chardon Granite are a very close match for the colors that Scott used. The eyes actually have a vertical slit painted over the blue with a reflection point, but the camera wouldn't pick that up since it's such a recessed part of the mini.

For the stripes I combined GW Ice Blue and VMC Light Turquoise. The nose and pads of his paws were based with a mix of VMC Tan Earth and GW Scab Red- they're a brighter pink than scotts, but I think it looks good, especially the nose. It gives the cat a very sinister feel, which I like- I think it suits him.

I've had a very busy day of painting and this will be my last update before going to bed for many long hours.

I finished her dress using Regal Blue and Enchanted Blue with various increasing mixes of VMC Deck Tan for highlights. She's turned out very different than Scott's version. I think she looks pretty good, but I'm not sure she's as good as she could be. Suggestions?

Be patient. I think it is coming together fine. It is easy to get frustrated or discouraged when a model still has white areas. Remember it will look better with every color you add.

I just found out yesterday that the Hobby Town Model Competition is this Saturday, so I'm definately going to be entering Alys. I've attached her to the base, which you can see below. I'm going to be adding 2 more blades of grass to fill in the base a little more- I don't want to do any more than that because I don't want to keep the viewer from seeing the rest of the piece.

These are some quick pics I snapped last night- I'm not completely happy with them so I'll be resetting and taking some beter ones tonight, but they do give you an idea of the completed mini. I'll also be sure to get a good shot of the face, as it has more tones and shades than is shown here.

I'm happy with how her hair turned out- that's the best bold hair I've ever painted.

I completely redid the face on Alys. I also finally gave in to the feedback I was getting over at WAMP and addd some more greenery to the scene to make it less sparse and to add some extra color. I also added some more soil to get rid of the akward separation between the plinth and the scene.
