If you didn't know, Scott Hockley has done a Paint Masters over at WAMP. It's where we follow his step by step for painting a mini as a learning project. For this one he did Alys and Pussycat from Hasslefree miniatures.
I'm following his guide for creating the base as well, which is a mushroom. Here's what I came up with:
And here's a shot with Alys for scale:
I don't have very many P3 paints which means I can't follow his exact recipes, but I found some of my Vallejo colors are very close matches. Here's a WIP shot of the mushroom:
I also decided that I wanted to diverge a little and use real scale grass on the dio, to make it look like the mushroom is real size and Alys is just that tiny, to fit in with the Wonderland theme. My first idea was to preserve some grass from my backyard and just use that.
Well, preserving grass is just about impossible. The first batch was limp and impossible to use, the second curled up into hard little sticks. I went on a search and finally found some pretty realistic looking grass at a craft store in town, so I cut and pinned it to the base and painted over their strange color scheme to make it look more real. I also finished up the spots, everything else on the mushroom, and added a rock to break up the sandy-paste I added to the base.
I'll be moving onto Alys next.
