alright so ... i have this idea, right. and im trying it out, but i wanted to know if anyof you had tried this before.

i have this wizard whos activating a wand. and i want it to be the only ONLY light, and its purple, so that means everything would be purple, or black because of the absence of light...right?

what do you all think about this????

If I understand you

you are trying to make the wand be the ONLY lighting source for the mini?

If that is the case, you would have the purple shaded colors on front, just like normal OSL.

Depending on the room the character is in, there might be some light reflected off of the walls to the character\'s back, creating some color or shadow there as well. That depends entirely on the room the character is in though, so it might help you to figure that out as well. I haven\'t tried OSL this aggressively (so take this with a grain of salt), but I would try and find some excuse to shade even the darkest areas.

Whatever you end up doing, you need to post some pics for us - I\'m quite interested to see how it works!

No not really!
Think about the colour of the clothes that the wizard would be wearing. You expect they would all change towards purple, but if you look to Mrika\'s Goldberry the colours of the clothing change with the lighting.
So you\'ll need to experiment and consult a colour wheel to see where the colour changes would occur. If anyone you know has coloured Camera lens filters then try using them and see the results.

OSL is a great technique and I wish you lots of luck with it.
Post pictures. Lots of Pictures. :D

EDIT: It looks as if Mrika\'s taken down the Goldberry picture which is a damn shame as it was a Golden Deamon Gold Winner and a perfect example of OSL.

As Dragonsearch was saying, not completely. The light only tints the colour of the clothing. Personally I would find the parts which will have the light shining on them and paint them normally, however and a bit of purple to the mix. Then glaze over the areas with various glazes of purples, with brighter shades being used where the light would shine the brightest.

Maybe you could place the mini in some kind of diorama. The mini painted as you describe it would look a bit strange against a white or neutral background. If you made a simple diorama you could enhance the effect of the glowing staff by letting it make a pool of light in an otherwise dark surrounding.

alright i must not have been completely clear when i explained. when i said it would all be purple...i did mean shades of purple, like the skin what was in the lighted area would be a purple shade of her true skin color. and i do think im going to put her in a diorama, outside, because shes not in a room and its pitch black outside, mmmm:maybe ill put her next to a dying tree: : and she could be attacking someone: but she is also my player character for D&D :maybe ill just buy another:

If the wand is to be the \"only, ONLY\" light source, you are correct that anything not lit by the wand would be black. It\'s kind of a cool idea, but might be difficult to pull off correctly on a mini and have it still look good. It definately wouldn\'t look like much from the back as the entire thing from that angle would be undifferentiated black. Instead of being reasonably viewable fom 360 degrees, you\'d essentially be limiting the viewing range to about half that, probably somewhat less.
Still, if pulled off, it would probably look really cool from that angle. :D

I suggest a torch with some purple gel over it (sweet wrappers work!). Try photographing the mini in the dark, but also people/objects in the room to see how the purple light affects other colours. Tried this before when painting OSL and found it useful...

I love you Brits! For the longest time I thought \"washup liquid\" was liquid hand soap, not what us Canucks call dish soap. God bless this wonderfull computer age we live in.

\'Washing up liquid\'

Hope this helps a little with our quaint colloquialisms!:D

*Looks down*
Yarrr....me life do be a sham.

I was confused for a while, too! I spent a loong time tracking down some liquid bath soap, and finally ended up with this thick, creamy, pink rose smelling mess. Needless to say, it didn\'t work that well mixing it with paints, and I was confused as to how Jakob Nielsen could recommend it and still be able to sleep at night.

\"Look, up there in the sky! It\'s a donkey, it\'s a cow, no, it\'s Thick as a brick man!!\"
Sting like a butterfly, float like a bee.
