My dad would really have pissed you off then. One time when I was a kid riding in the back seat my dad tossed his cigarette butt out the window. Of course with the way air around a moving car goes it flew back in the rear window and hit me in the eye. Luckily the burn healed.

Here\'s the problem with this: Where then will non-smokers go to do the social things that smokers do but be without smoke? One smoker in a bar can ruin the environment for a non-smoker. The reverse is not true.

There is another side to this. My wife is 5\'3\" and just over 100 lbs. Overweight women sometimes say to her \"I hate you you\'re so skinny.\" She\'s decided her response should be: \"I hate you because you don\'t have a debilitating disease that causes severe pain, weight loss and hair loss. You are blessed with a body that works right and yet you throw it away by overeating.\"

Littering :)

Don\'t know about in your general area, but here they are both considered littering...so in some respects they are on the same level...they can both cost you $1500.

Hehehe there\'s my two cents for the day :p ... (scrounges for more pennies.)

I think this is perfectly reasonable if someone is obese enough to prevent the airline from being able to sell the seat next to them. If someone takes up two seats, they should be charged for two seats. So far as I can tell this isn\'t discrimination, just common sense. Am I missing something?

Without being rude, are you overweight? It\'s much easier to see the \'common sense\' in such a thing when it doesn\'t apply to you.

Just as it\'s easy for me as a non-smoker to say a smoking ban in public places makes sense, whereas if I were a smoker I\'d probably think it sucked.

How about we say all skinny people have to sit double up on a seat? That make sense? They don\'t take up as much room, so why not double sell the space?

Airplanes...

I have never ridden on a large airplane, but I hear people complain about obnoxious people ruining their flights and making them uncomfortable...maybe should have a screening test for rude people...make them pay double and they can have and empty seat next to them as no on wants to sit by them :bouncy:

I\'ll shut up now lmao...just woke up so not making much sense... :D

Ah, so it\'s all right to inconvience the smokers by sending them outside in the rain or cold...
It\'s all right to make bars and clubs loose profits by passing laws that the owners didn\'t want or agree to...

Just so you can go to a place that normally would be filled with smoke.

Yeah, now that you put it that way it seems SO fair.

I am not a smoker, never have been, nor do I wish to be. However, in all fairness, there is a harsh level of unfairness and rudeness that does happen to a smoker these days. I see many who smoke that are being told to go out in the cold and rain or severe heat to smoke...not even being able to stand under breezeways any longer because it is still 30 ft from a door (HELLO IT IS OUTSIDE!?!?) How is this fair? It isn\'t.

That same type of bs is happening to obese people now...and I am sure there is another target group on the list just as soon as the other numbers drop. Grant you, there are times that smoking does bother me...BUT by turning ALL social establishments into NON smoking areas BY LAW ...how I ask, HOW is that fair and equal to smokers. Society is leaving them NO way of living...food establishments, work place, social gatherings, all being made non-smoking...as if to say \'we will FORCE you to stop\' ...

Yet...to many (STRESS: NOT ALL) to many non-smokers that is perfectly acceptable because it does not cause any discomfort to themselves so why worry it is for \'their\' better life. (Which translates into screw anyone that doesnt like and do how I like and do).

BUT I also know...that if the next target group happens to fit into YOUR life and what you want/need/like/hobby to...then finally many of those will be outspoken to the outrage and unfairness. It seems that lately there is NO compromise...and quite frankly, that is going to -in the long run- make everyone miserable. Sadly though, I know many will point still and say \'it is their fault I am unhappy.\'

If it is your choice to do whatever it is you do... least accept responsibility. Many also need to learn that sometimes likes and dislikes will overlap. You cannot please everyone all the time. But I see so many that want immediate gratification and satisfaction to their needs and damn the rest. Oh yeah...real fair... real just....:(

Seriously, if you don\'t smoke (which I don\'t) and you don\'t like it follow this very simple step. Yes, only one simple step boys and girls.

Leave

Yes, that\'s right! use those legs of yours and walk the hell away! i promise, no smokers are going to run you down and blow smoke in your face. They are nice people afterall. :flip::bouncy:

And this is my point...being a quitter... smoking or non-smoking doesn\'t affect me either way...but still I side with the smokers.
Why? Because they are being blackballed.

Not only are they paying more for their cigarettes, not only do they have to brave wind and rain to feed the addiction, not only because the club owners are losing money.

These are not the reasons.

My reason is this... YOU John Q. Public have no problem condeming these people to unfair tax\'s, unfair conditions, or anything else...as long as YOU are comfortable...YOU don\'t truly care about equality because you\'d have stood right there with the smokers and bar owners when they asked to leave some clubs as smoking designated.

YOU only care about YOURSELVES and cover it by saying \"It\'s more healthy for you in the long run. It\'s a disgusting habit.\"

So ,Yes, I side with the smokers because most of them are at least willing to meet you half way.

Actually, yes, I am overweight. Not enough to require two seats in an airplane, but enough to be considered obese by my country\'s standards (stupid BMI calculations). I still think its wrong to expect the airline to eat the cost of the seat if someone takes up two. I also think its wrong for someone to bring their kid on the plane without paying saying they\'ll be \"in their lap\" and then trying to put them in a seat also. Especially since these days most flights are full and sometimes people have to be bumped from flights. Also, making skinny people double up is patently ridiculous (and I assume you were being sarcastic there) as no matter how skinny someone is, two of them aren\'t going to fit in a single seat.
To go back to the other topic, I don\'t think that a general smoking ban is a good thing, even though I benefit quite a bit from such. I think its better to have a licensing type operation where say a bar owner chooses to buy a smoking license or not, and I choose to go to a bar (or restaurant etc) based on whether its smoking or not. I do however think there are some places that should always be non-smoking such as hospitals. But I also would like to see something like \"break rooms\" for smokers (and a seperate one for non-smokers) so they don\'t have to go outside when its cold, rainy, or they otherwise just don\'t feel like going outside. While I positively hate smoking, that doesn\'t mean I hate smokers...

Er, no offense, but this surprises you how? People are selfish, there\'s no getting around it. And hypocritical too. Most of us in some way or other. I try not to be this way, but I am sure I am selfish and hypocritical sometimes just as most people are... it\'s just how people are.

last reply on this...

Actually... I find myself to be just the opposite... I am self sacrificing and passive to sometimes a fault.. to say we all are selfish... um.. sorry I dont fit that stereotype...

As far as the bars for smokers and bars for non and such...that would be compromise...which honestly should be in fact the policy...but many are unwilling to bend...not all (as that would be pidgeon holing society as a whole) ...but many.

We have to start as a whole in general realizing that we do not ALL fit a stereotype be it selfish, smoker, obese, etc... we all are who we are...some habits and patterns may overlap but no two of us are exactly the same...but that is good...life would be damn boring if we were all alike..

I refuse to accept that we all have to be the same...we all must chose our own paths, likes, dislikes, lives, jobs, etc...

With that... I tap the dead horse... \"it\'s dead jim\" ....

Personally I wish Airlines would realise we are not all undernourished dwarfs (no offense to any of the vertically challenged out there), and increase their seat sizes accordingly. It would be nice to sit in a plane and not have to use both armrests.
