Andy, so sorry to hear about your Aunt.
Hopefully the cough will turn out to be something easily treated.
If anything the diagnosis of autism should be something less to be worry about, Yes it's going to be XXXXing difficult but the support groups now are superb and the coping methodologies that have been developed for Autistic Spectrum Disorders are much better.
I know that wanting the best for your kids is natural, and this must feel awful, but try finding some of Temple Grandin's writing about living as High Functioning Autistic person.

I also see any diagnosis as a positive, no matter what, as you now know what you're dealing with. I know enough people with autism and having systems to deal can ease the burden. One friends child didn't like noise, at their wedding we all waved instead of clapping, it was actually quiet special.

I know about loss,sadness in news ,and bad times.we all do.we all have these periodic uphill battles that seem more than overwhelming...but you need to know nothing is as bad as it seems.ever..think bout this what my pop used to say."90% of the things we worry bout NEVER HAPPEN.10% OF THESE THINGS CAN BE WORKED OUT.THAT LEAVES 1% THAT CAN LEGITIMATELY GO WRONG.".. b/n you and me I'll take those odds in the stock market anyday matey..hang in there it WILL be ok.please trust me on this!!!

Hi guys thanks for all the great support I really mean that it makes a difference! I would never normally post stuff like that on a forum and I instantly regretted it didn't know what I was thinking but I'm glad I did now. Good news is that while I haven't spoken to the doctor yet I did speak to the lady who took the X-ray and while she stressed she wasn't a doctor etc etc. she did say she couldn't see anything and she's taken thousands of these things. So while not in the clear I feel a lot less worried. (Don't tell on her she wasn't supposed to say anything litigation unfortunately!). My son I've been reading and talking and pm in and I feel a lot less stressed I think it was shear shock and not knowing that freaked me out! I feel a lot less concerned now and accepting of the situation. He was a lovely easy going lad the beginning of last week so why should it be any different now? He is affectionate and fun and very clever he just has his rituals and idiosyncrasies but then again I'm a grown man who has to check the front door three times every time I go out of the house and the rest of the time I lock myself in the toilet and paint toy figures?!? So all in all thanks for the kind words and thoughts. ..... I've also picked a brush up again now so I must be feeling better

Good news, Andy! There are many examples of people living successfully with autism. The earlier you know about the diagnosis the better. With this knowledge you can work to make sure he gets the the proper help he needs when he starts school. There may be some difficult times ahead for him, but with the proper support from family, school etc. there's no reason why he shouldn't succeed in life.

We're currently going through autism assessments with my son too, if you ever need a chat (even though you don't know me all that well) I'm always open to talk about it. In the end it's just a label, it doesn't fundamentally change who he is, he won't suddenly be any different just because he's had the diagnosis, but it might help explain any behavioural quirks he might have. Also sorry to hear about your aunt and best wishes for your health
