OK I\'m gonna try to get this right
There\'s a lot of people who claim \"righteous indignation\" when they
really just don\'t like something. Many of the people who are lobbying against these books fall into that category, IMO.
But, I have a fairly uncommon perspective on things, I think. I\'m a Christian guy, aged 22 years with a buttload (no pun intended, but I think it\'s funny so it stays) of English and Comparative Literature classes under my belt at University. One class (C Lit 342 - Folk and Fairy Tales) featured a Harry Potter book in the cirriculum. The original book was the last thing we read before the final. \"We\" being everybody but me
I have no real moral obligation to magic or anything showing up in fiction. I split my time reading Scripture and Horus Heresy books before settling down for bed lol
The people who have a legitimate claim against Harry Potter don\'t simply say \"Magic is bad, mmkay?\" That kind of criticism is something I would expect the cop from South Park to come up with. The serious criticisms of Harry Potter revolve around two things:
1) The books challenge what most people would call \"fantasy\" universes. The vast majority of the people in the Potterverse (to steal a linguistic convention from Joss Whedon) think of their world in the same way we do. They see mundane, everyday kind of stuff going on and have no sense of magic and demons and stuff. It\'s not like Lord of the Rings\' Middle Earth or anything. It presents the use of magic in an otherwise familiar kind of world, which some people could use springboard into real-life interests in Wicca and whatnot.
2) JK Rowling has been accused of selling out her gender by presenting dominant male figures everywhere, and having very few strong female characters (most of them being bad guys/gals). Nothing to do with this debate
Again I don\'t necessarily think these are bad things, I just thought the movie I was forced to see on a date in high school was terrible and wanted no interest in any other part of the franchise.
On the other hand, I have a friend (also Christian) whose little sister lives with a father who encourages the exploration of anything pleasurable... make an informed decision so go ahead and try drugs, drinking, etc. and the fact that you\'re 16 doesn\'t matter. Said sibling is also into \"white magic\" and all that stuff, which is very far from the path we all want her to be on. Harry Potter and other positive depictions of magic users kind of get in the way here.
Questionable parenting skills obviously factor heavily into this equation here, but IN THIS CONTEXT the crap we feed our kids is relevant. Many, many parents in modern North America suck. They\'re inattentive, insensitive, and many would rather have a kid on all kinds of pharmaceuticals than actually be active in raising them properly.
When kids have no guidance from their parents they are liable to make bad decisions based on the limited info they have.
So yeah, I have a different take on the issue than most people.
I think that sex/violence/etc. in the media wouldn\'t be a big deal if our generation raised their kids better.
There\'s a reason medical professionals expect life expectancies to decrease despite medical technology: our lifestyle is becoming incredibly unhealthy for a variety of reasons, not all of them physical.
Note: I am in no way accusing anyone here of being a bad parent. For the most part, I know nothing about you aside from your modelling abilities and whatnot. I\'m just trying to make a point
Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this. It\'s by far the longest thing I\'ve posted in a long time.
