Any old school D&D players left ?

Ok I\'ve been playing 2nd edtion D&D for about 10 years off and on. I\'ve read some of the new books and there is just to many changes for my liking. Just wanted to see if there is any 2nd edtion or lower players left. Books for this game are very scarce now even the players guide is hard to find. Another Question I would like to raise is does anybody know if WOTC is going to make reproductions of these books? I\'ve heard rumors but that\'s it. :)

heh heh hell I can remember when Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling were both race AND class..... No prestige classes, no sub races, just good ole DnD.

I only began playing AD&D about a year before 3rd edition was released. For a while we had a 2nd ed. game running concurrently with several 3rd ed. games. I have to say I prefer 3E. Base attack bonus is much easier to manage than thac0!!

Try it, Torath! You might like it. And no one says you have to give up your AD&D. But don\'t expect WOTC to support it. I seriously doubt they\'ll republish the books. I\'d suggest you check ebay or used book stores.

I did see some nice changes in the new edtion such as your strength instead of a old wyvern having the same strength of a frost gaint. Now that scale is much larger from 1-50 I think instead of 1-25 as with the armour class has changed dramatically. I guess the main set back for me is the new dice system I\'m not sure I understand how it works, and the old way is just plain simple :) i think when WOTC took over they should have blended the rules together better :)

I would still be playing 2nd edition except all the people I used to play with moved out of town, so now I paint instead. I think who you play with is more important than what system you use. I have not tried 3rd edition as we all had 2nd edition books, were poor, and were having fun with 2nd.

I frequently see 1st and 2nd edition D&D core rulebooks at used bookstores, and they are common on ebay. If you really wanted you can download any rulebook or module from 1st or 2nd edition as a pdf from www.svgames.com, though they are something like $4-5 each. This is useful for old modules, but printing out a several hundred page book is not practical.

I still have my 1st edition books, and still buy old modules, but mostly for sentimental reasons.

Old players you say...

Torath;

I\'ve been playing D&D since about 1978. Most of the play the last 10 years or so has been 2nd Edition. I still play in a few 2E games, but I have to tell you I\'m rapidly becoming a 3E fan. A lot of the things that we had made as \"house rules\" are now in the rule set. The dice thing is actually easier now as most of your rolls are made with a D20. I usually only carry a few dice with me now instead of a whole bag. The flexibility you have in customizing your character via the skills and feats is great. With them openning up the D20 rules there are some really good new publishers out their making some very interesting modules and companion books. Mongoose Publishing and AEG com to mind.

There are still some bugs to be worked out, but the 3E rules are really very good and I encourage you to give them a try. It\'s hard to try something new, especially when you\'ve been playing with the old rules for so long, but in this case it is definitely worth the effort. :D

Cheers,

Grumb

thank you for the input thus far everyone, @Grump I was considering using some of the rules from 3E but it sounds like there is alot of big improvement\'s in the new edtion\'s. Maybe it wouldn\'t hurt to give it a try. I\'ve recently spent about three months tracking down alot of the 2E books, could just have to do with location? @Herb the bitter, I agree the only thing that matters is who you play with and what everyone in the party like\'s. Them books sure are expensive :( oh and i think I\'ll check out that site svgames, the modules with all the maps included have been hard to find also. I did try ebay and got suckerd but now I have educated my self with the rules and ways of buying from the internet (which really only took about an hour damn wish I would have done that the first time :)

Herb the bitter is spot on - it\'s the people who make the game, not the system.

Torath, you should be able to find used copies of the 3E books too. I recommend www.powells.com. It\'s a very large bookstore and they frequently have used copies available. Amazon also sells brand new books at a discount.

There are some things in 3E that take some getting used to, especially things like AC working completely backward than it did before. But if a complete idiot like me can learn them then anyone can!
:D

I started in 1980 and got out about the time the Planescape modules and expansions were coming out. The folks I gamed with started getting married and having kids. I remember having to lug around a box of die to games....

i\'ve never played, but i REALLY want to. The only problem is everyone in california\'s all into being \"cool\" at ALL costs, so NOBODY plays! Even the complete geeks are too cool for it:(

But, i am building up an adventure team and working on baddies. i\'ve got a human monk and a giant in my galary, and i\'m ALMOST done with my goblin assassin!

i have downloaded \"OpenRPG\" and profile sheets off the internet for playing D&D and similar games online. Maybe we could set up an online adventuring team? i know it totally destroys using minis, but at least we\'d be playing.

Oh, and i got mIRC too, but i also have MSN to chat on. (Although you can chat right in OpenRPG... it\'s more for getting everyone together for setting up the game. Works better than e-mails IMHO)

I still love the original D&D stuff (I started playing in 1985) and still have all my first edition AD&D books. When WOTC bought out TSR I was disappointed. However, I have to say that 3.5 is an outstanding system and I enjoy it a great deal on those chances I have to play it. My only gripe with WOTC\'s D&D is that I don\'t like their art style.

Torath-

I was running a 2nd ed. game for quite awhile, before becoming convinced to try 3.0. I mean, probably 2-3 years my game has been 2nd ed, and we just switched to 3.5 (go straight to 3.5, do NOT try 3.0 first) about 2 months ago.

It\'s difficult getting used to the differences at first, but the ways you can customize your characters to be different from everybody else is well worth it.

If you need, I\'ve got some 2nd ed. stuff I\'m thinking of getting rid of, or if you DO try to go 3.5, PM me as I might have a solution for you.

Wow, Did not think I would get this big of a response :D I\'m very happy that there are still alot of 2nd.ed players out there :) one thing I can see everyone who has switch or plays both is happy about the smaller dice bags:) @Itchy thanks for the links I found one that had a couple of useful things for DM\'s Dungeon Masters Guild and FU-UK Miniatures Links page! link to all major mini manufacturer\'s After Listening (reading) to people who have played for years and switch or play both now I really am thinking about trying to get some of the 3.5 books. But Don\'t get me wrong will have to keep playing Second edition :D

We play 3.5 and convert each new upgrade gives us an excuse to look at the new pretty books. Todd is addicted to the new book smell:D

My gaming group still plays 1st edition with a mixture of 2nd edition. We tried 3E but found the inconsistencies caused too much arguing. So we went back to the older versions and life is good.

Besides, like miniatures, you can never have too many dice.

Oops, have to finish some minis for tomorrow\'s game!

Forgot to mention you can find some of the older books at your FLGS and on ebay. I\'ve recently added the original Unearthed Arcana and a couple old monster manuals to my collection.

Dude

Yes! My 1st Edition/2nd Edition Hybrid is still my favorite ruleset. Nothing beats the feel, art and game liek the old stuff. I liked having to fill in the gaps myself. It allowed me to be creative :D

Hmm, since my Monster Manual has a 1977 copywrite date, I think I\'ve been playing since about then. I\'ve played 1st Ed, 2nd Ed, real 2nd Ed, 3rd Ed, and so forth, but I still like the old complicated as hell set.
