AOW Dwarf Berserker

This mini had been siting on my paint-station, in all its primed glory, for about one year so I decided that enough is enough and I got to work. :p

It\'s my first time painting large areas of flesh. As I usually paint 40k miniatures painting flesh, till now, meant painting hands and faces. I\'l be following mousekiller\'s tutorial to a large extent. It can be found here: http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/index.php?showtopic=18951&hl=AOW+Dwarf+walkthrough

At the moment flesh is almost done. I\'d have to clean up mistakes, paint the final highlights and add a couple of glazes before it\'s completed.

lookn good, I think it looks pretty done now, so dont go too crazy with the final highlights. Maybe a few washes of red would fill it out as well. But like i said its lookn good.

Thanks Monkeysplitters. :)

Actually I was thinking of redoing the part where shadows meet midtones for a smoother transition and then use GW Washes for glazes. I\'m thinking of using Ogryn Flesh as an overal glaze, a light Leviathan Purple glaze on his face (concentrating around the eyes) and blue and purple glazes on and around the veins on his muscles.

Final highlight will be elf flesh and I will use it sparringly. I\'ll propably redo some of the most prominent highlights after the glazes.

Let\'s hope al this works out in the end.

Hello Stellio. The miniature looks allready great. What colour did you use as base for the skin? Is it Tallarn Flesh, Dwarf Flesh or something else? Wait to see it finished.

Thanks Corgan! (By the way send me a pm to tell me who you are as I can\'t remember.)

Actually the base is Dark Flesh, though it\'s more of a shadow. The midtone is Tanned Flesh. You can see a detailed painting guide in mousekiller\'s tutorial which I\'ve linked in the first post. ;)

I did some more work today. I proceeded as I said I would in my previous post except that I also added a Baal Red glaze to his lower lip and his nose (he\'s a dwarf ater all).

All that is left is to redo the final highlights and paint fingernails and eyes. For fingernails I was thinking of painting them like the rest of the skin (as they are now) but highlighting them up to skull white. I\'d like to hear your ideas on that as I\'ve never painted fingernails before. ??? Eyes will be done with a 5/0 brush and lots of cursing...

The nails don\'t have to be that bright unless you want him to have a French manicure :D

Anyway he looks pretty good so far. I can\'t tell which image has the correct white balance but they all look well done. Is he really that darkly tanned? I usually think of Dwarfs as Scottish and therefore pretty pasty in color. They\'d probably burn rather than tan running around naked in the sun.

I\'d say the 4th pic from the top is closest to the real thing (at least in my monitor). He\'s quite dark skinned I guess. It makes him look impossing which suits him well.

For the nails I think I\'l try first a mix of 50:50 Elf Flesh:Skull White and see if it can serve as the final highlight. My aim is to strike a blance between having too subtle fingernails so as not to be distinct from the rest of the flesh and having too brigh \"manicured\" fingernails. Let\'s hope I don\'t fail misserably.

The good thing is that I\'m enjoying these WIP threads as I get to track my porgress plus I receive your comments and encouragment. :) I\'m happy with how this mini is progressing. It was a good breack from 40k minis and I\'ve finally been brave enough to have a go at painting flesh to a decent level.

Bit of a Stereotype there.
Not all Scots are Ginger haired or palid skinned.

Having lived in Glasgow for 18 months trust me they are lol :D

Ok, I wasn\'t abducted by the Inquisition or some mysterious cult. I caught a cold and didn\'t feel like painting much lately. Good thing is I\'m back and the skin is finished except from the lips where I forgot to paint the final highlights.

It seems I missed the discussion about Dwarf and Scottish skin colour as well. In my imagination Dwarf skin is dark with a redish tint. Being short and muscular this makes them seem fearsome and imposing whereas with pale skin they could look soft. I also think slayers in particular should have redish skin; you know all this anger thing. :p Anyway I can\'t comment on the skintone of Scottish people as I\'ve never met anyone from Scottland, though I find it improbable that all of them have the same skin colour.

I almost forgot, here are the pics:

Really like the skin tones on him! Are you planning on doing any tattoos on the arm?

I\'m normally not a huge fan of AOW\'s output, but this piece may well sway me to pick him up - he\'s really rather nice :)

I don\'t think I\'ll do any tattoos. I wouldn\'t like to detract from the flesh after all this hard work. Pluss I\'m not sure I can do tattoos correctly, I\'m too afraid I\'ll mess up the mini.

The mini is very nice indeed. It depicts Slayers as I always imagined them.

Ok, sorry for the lack of updates but I\'m suffering from a cold which is comming and going and generally annoys me.

I basecoated the beard and hair. It doesn\'t sound much but it was quite difficult doing it without overpainting on the skin. I\'m glad it\'s done now. :)

i also think of them as being pale, after all they do live in mines. no reason why one could build up a tan adventuring (although i have an image in my head of one with sunburn!)

look good though, you might want to deepen the shadows between his fingers though

Well theoretically speacking Slayers would get a tan over time. They could be pale when they leave their hold disgraced seeking to atone themselves in a glorious death. So they go wandering around with little armour or clothing. At first they\'d get sunburns, then they\'ll get sunburns again. Now if they are unsuccesfull in finding the death they crave then their skin would start getting used to the sun rays and they\'ll start tanning. It could be a mark of status with the most tanned being the most long-lived and therefore the most succesfull (or unsucessfull since survival is not their top priority). lol

I agree about the shadows but I think Ill leave it till the mini is finished and I\'m making the final corrections in order to see how felsh ties with the rest of the colours.

thats quite good stuff there. like orc get darker skinned as they get harder and bigger, the better slayers get more tanned due to being outside!

Or he could become famous and make money by advertising sun lotions. :plol

I managed to do some more work on the hair today. I tried to drybrush them as per the tutorial but I didn\'t like the result so I chose to layer the highlights intstead. I\'ll keep the drybrushed highlights as a guide and blend them with the layered highlights. I\'ve finished a small part using the layering technique just to test how it looks. Your comments would be very helpfull here. :)

On the first two pics I haven\'t started layering the highlights while on the other pics I\'ve layered the first highlight (Bloood Red):
