I just saw a freaky programme called God\'s New Army (I think that\'s what it was called anyhow) about home-schooled kids from American Repulican Christian fundamentalist families who then go to this brand-spanking new college that\'s vying for Ivy League status, where they teach everything with a Biblical slant. They are aiming to get them all into politics and into the White House. These people have never been part of the real world due to their schooling, and the college system takes that a step further. I was shocked at some of the guff I saw on there. I\'m less worried by Muslim Fundamentalists and what have you, because they at least seem a bit peeved at something. The Repulican Christian Fundamentalists look beatific all the ruddy time and just refuse to engage with other folk\'s ideas. They aim to change America through politics, not violence. Thay are anti-choice on personal matters of all kinds. And they all love George W Bush.

Oops, just shit me pants! :eek:

I\'m scared of the crazies too. Because there is no middle ground with them, it\'s difficult to deal with. The abrassiveness of the entire attitude... that they want you to meet in the middle on things that are important to me, but you won\'t budge on things that are important to yourself... has always drove me nuts. If you want your brain to hurt go look up some of the arguements on why evolution should be taught in school... the whole concept that and idea that only 5% of the country believes should recieve 50% of the time devoted to a subject is absurd, but they\'ve convinced people that a discussion isn\'t balanced unless it pans out this way. I\'ve worked with a few of them, although they are a lot less frequent these days now that I live in Boston. But they will be the ones to blow us us all up, I\'m sure of it, forget the supposed threat from the middle east. But enough! back to the conspiracies about tomorrow! We\'re all gonna die!

I don\'t suppose we should be at all worried about Bush\'s foreign policy and the Republicans\' anti-bias towards libertarian views? The biggest superpower in the world (until China take over soon) and you put a one-eyed bigot like Bush in charge? That scares me far more.

Not this week... but it wasnt so long ago that they were.

As for changing the world through politics and ideas, that is fine in principle, but is essentially banning all other views other than your own right? or moral? I am not so sure... end then enforcing that point of view with a vast military strength...

we\'ve had Iraq II... and are heading to Iran next... ???

Aye you\'re right Pete. It was the jealousy of the Catholic Church that led to the crusades and what have you. They were jealous of the enlightened state of Islam at the time. What we see of Islam now is more retrograde compared to the past, and Catholicism (for example) had a huge say in that. Jealous and scared they were. Bloody institutions all the time ain\'t it? The US now, Great Britain then, France, all these people with a view to dominate. Catholicism is as bad and possibly worse than even the White Republican Fundamentalists. Then again, maybe not.

Anyway, as Bill said, I ain\'t seen no disaster yet!

The way I see it...

Most Americans enjoy their freedoms and believe in free will as laid out in the constitution under \"the right to pursue happiness\".

However, the 10% who believe the Gov\'t should have more control over us all go out and vote, while the other 90% of us ex-hippy liberal types sit around complaining about how no one else is electing us new leadership.

So, the so-called \'moral majority\' wins every time, even though they actually only represent a small fraction of the population.

The way I see it, this group will take over and push us into a new dark age. Then there will be a socio-economic backlash which will lead to a new renaisance. Since things happen faster now because of technology, this will only take decades as opposed to centuries as it did the last time.

Unfortunately, I won\'t be around for the good times, but I might have to see the bad. Hopefully my kids will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Anyhow, isn\'t 666 supposed to be the number of pages in the Devil\'s bible? Someone told me that once, anyone ever here of that? While trying to varify that piece of info I stumbled onto THIS SITE. It contains PDF\'s of both the regular and Satanic bibles, but what really gave me a laugh is the \'favorite sin\' section at the bottom. I guess it takes all kinds.

Oh, and the jealousy as the reason for the Crusades: first I have heard that theory, and I majored in Medieval History. The way it was put to me was that the Christian Church (pre reformation) was trying all sorts of things to stop Christian nobles from killing each other (violence on the sabbath or on Wednesday or Friday was a corporal sin, etc.) then found the best way was to point it outward instead of inward. Hatred of \"them\" is a great way to unify \"us\".

We once had a President that well over half the country hated, that fought a war that not very many people wanted, that had cities in riots over drafting of the poor but not the rich, that had our police shooting citizens, that took immigrants and shoved them into the frontlines of a war they knew nothing about.

His name was Abraham Lincoln.

I\'m sure the people then, thought they were doomed. too.
Had we the polls and the massive media then, Lincoln would have probably gone down as one of the worst presidents ever.

History is funny like that.
